Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
Just started reading The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, which promises to be a rollicking romp full of mystery and high adventure and things of that nature generally.

It's in a beautiful little volume with very thin, gold-edged pages, a bit like a pocket bible or something.

Same here. There was someone called Rachel Verinder on here at one point but although I read and enjoyed the Moonstone I didn't spot the reference at all. In fact I can't remember how I realised that that was where it originated, I guess I either googled the name for some reason or maybe someone told me.

The Woman in White is also pretty good. It's actually one of my Mum's favourite books I think. Maybe it's sad to have such an overlap with her taste but really there is no point denying it - her latest tip is something called Cows by Matthew Stokoe, I dunno much about it to be honest, has anyone read it?

Ages ago - I remember dry gagging at a bit
where the lead character's mentally ill mother makes him eat a cow's intestine and shit sloshes onto the plate
. It was one of those trangressive-y things that came out on Creation Books in the early 2000s...bit more gross than The Woman In White...

ive been reading popular '60s paperback One Dimensional Man and what is striking about it so far is that Marcuse is very upset that conditions have got so good for workers that they have lost all desire to cause trouble. which reminds me of Hobsbawn saying that the big problem the left has is that it has achieved all its aims.

Sadly not the edition with the cool cover above, not wanting to chance £20+ on something I've never read. Really torn on this – first 2/3 of the book is like PKD meets Muriel Spark, which is a serious recommendation and one of those incredible dream list things you never expect to actually encounter on Earth (like zero-calorie booze). But I found the ending a let-down, which actually pissed me off.

I only discovered McCloy’s existence recently, and I like her style…if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. This could go in the ‘detective fiction’ thread I guess?

Starting Fred Vermorel’s “Queen Victoria’s Lovers” and, three pages in, it’s great.

The one that gets me is the one about "Nice terrorist attacks" also "live today or tomorrow". In fact that always gets me "Rolling Stones - Live in Hamburg" do they?

lost a bit of momentum with this. it feels like a document of the gilded age of labour. you've never had it so good. i'll probably finish it but i've picked up another cowper powys in the meantime. i think it's maiden castle.
