A few liminal numbers, liminal as in intersections of signatures, moods, elevating transport devices, while avoiding language like genres which can accumulate unhealthy inferences

Aphex Twin - Ageispolis. Age is police? Who the fuck cares with harmonics as rich and bountiful. For all his faults and cliches, when Mr James is on (like here) he opens up a valve as if a horizon is propelled toward you and you might just get a fleeting glimpse of heaven. Again, if I had to pick one track from a specific artist, like Ron Trent in a prior post, the same lesson applies with Ageispolis and Aphex. Tremendous

Speedy J - Beam Me Up. A Sunday session classic. The first time I heard it a bucket of drugs were involved and a full mind left body experience followed, a very liminal psychosis. Eastern Bloc scored, what a store, what a tune

Air Liquide - Chromoplastic. For the intro really, I’d love to know where its section was lifted from. An English voice cuts in through swirling interference whirclicks ”there are at least 3 people from another planet living on Earth today....”. You fucking what mate? It’s stayed the course too, unlike all the dross on various TEE comps. Sucker for a shuffle

1993 provides a window to include a mix from one of the most savage nights out with mates, AWOL at the Paradise Club, summer bank holiday. Posted in other threads, it’s one of the few I listen to every year without fail and the perfect antidote to a shit mood

When there’s a group of you, all mullered, all from different ethnic backgrounds and cultures, not just trying to outdrug each other but everyone else at a venue, your crew becomes like a survival squad. They are capable of paradoxically killing you and caring for you. Not all of your number will make it home. Recall oceans of colour, saucer eyed girls with sharp bob haircuts and tight leggings, no attitude (maybe we got lucky) but so many casualties it defies description. Class/race/faith irrelevant

A few tapes survive into the internet era and as much as Kenny Ken, Randall, M Finn et al have masses of mixes archived, being at said night, its maniacal madness and the mix reappearing years later means it has to be included. Snappy transitions, MC with buoyant restraint, they hammered it

93’s an intersectional year. It marked the 50th Anniversary of LSD but also first wave of snowballs and china whites, which could be a weird, messy, warping experience mixed with trips. This mix epitomises the frenzied pinnacle of joy AWOL could be, from tune selection to hearing the crowd again, so it overrides M Finn’s contribution (no offence Mick). Barnstorming

Not a regular, more to do with friends in area and a long weekend. One of the few times experiencing jouissance and music, “The Fever”

Paying for it now - early onset dementia, hernias, wasted 5-a-side career as midfield general

WARP LP 18, innocuous looking numbers and the code to gold

This compilation is a strictly 4 groovers sampler, collectively constructed during the late summer / early autumn of 1993 at s4g studios nottingham by various combinations of 14 diy dj's, engineers & personnel.
Special thanks to royski, global & free party goers.

One of my favourite slices of space displacing house cuts, prime 1993 where 3 out of 4 sides have aged very well retroactively. If I can’t represent this I may as well move to the Arctic. On Warp, it’s among DIY’s best work and, in the wake of Castlemorton, gained plenty of traction. Straddles dance floor and sofa, vehicle and Sunday pub slaughter if the landlord‘s onside

Firenze - Orange is Orange. I’d love to know where the sample is from. Bliss later put out gear as Baby Mammoth on Pork and is one of the bridges between here and Hull, along with Steve Cobby. An ethereal, mythical track with soft rhythmic touches that mixes well with Soichi Terada, any number of Italian imports and Mr Fingers material

Victor Dynagroove Ensemble (aka Jack) - Elevater, for the chords, for the beats. Soundtrack to many a road trip, comedowns at Sandbach services wearing shades due to eyes spiralling in the land of the lost

Overview - Be Still (Vickerstraat Mix). DK, Charles Webster, Digs and Woosh. Full crew nearly, delicate touches yet still locked into focus. “Up, up in the sky” looping, magical, mesmerising

Nail - Cassiopeia. An exercise is transcendental power reigned back half a degree, you’re seduced rather than pummelled or bludgeoned. For me, this track is among the very best British examples of nailing nuance. Of letting harmonics breathe and having the intuition and skill to structure flow it in such a way that you’re balls deep in it listening. Mr Tolliday has a discography to rival most and Cassiopeia is a primer of everything he put out subsequently.
GENIUS

Notable additions Essa - Up There Out There, for the key synths (well worth sampling), not the sleeve which looks far more cliched Rave than the audio enclosed

1994 was a very good year and I’ll have to slalom a bit to distill. A standout release is Primitive Painter’s self titled lp, which now sells for 50£. Two monster size gems of electronic blues come in the form of Cathedral and Invisible Landscapes, both well rinsed by Sir Weatherall. It has gear/kit sounds reminiscent of Richard H Kirk’s cluster of heavyweights contemporary to PP‘s lp. Bubbling, groove-soaked, ebullient trance out transportation

Exposure to Coil mostly came through my older brother. I knew he was gay early on, but his taste was exclusively industrial, US hardcore, punk, crossover thrash and house. Still is. He played Scatology and HR to death, which even now aren’t quite what I draw from music’s well. Love’s Secret Domain changed everything, but the release where their sound seemed to coalesce (for me) into a more balanced whole was ELpH - pHILM #1 and their evolving, post-LSD varietals

When we think of the range in musical development in the 20th century, from Stockhausen or the total envelopment of Xenakis, I’d place Coil alongside such giants. I don’t hear pastoralist, romantic hues in this composition, more fluidity of tone, harmonics, minimalism and the paradox of ethereal ecstatic melancholy. The track which dosed a few close friends too “what gear/kit is in their arsenal here?”. A psalm to the lost, it still has it all in abundance

And I really really need to read this one day

It's on the pile with Ulysses and the complete poetic works of Luke Davies and that one blog by Craner

A series of solo Kirk lp’s and an accumulation of an already outrageous body of work. Hard to distill so a bit like trimming roses

Sweet Exorcist - Spirit Guide to Low Tech. You can’t miss the sleeve or the groove Kirk caught the sails of with these productions. Signature wooooo-hooo rippling synth riffs. Got a bit lazy/tongue-in-cheek with track titles like “Nice”

Honourable mentions - Jazz. Caned by DiY with more upfront tempo

Sandoz - Intensely Radioactive. “Intelligence”, might work better as a 5 and a half minute smash and grab raid piece. Snaking and river-like, quality mixing tool, punch out when the hook wanes

Virtual State, possible top 5 favourite lp, too good. Think back to Testone, all the infamous bleep tunes, it’s as if he pulled back on tempos and let more light in. Black Jesus Voice will always be an introspective and explosive experience, which means dosing with it is infrequent. Virtual State I’ve danced, driven, fucked and pillow talked to. Say no more

Come, humanity and the gods unified

into Freezone, phwooooar, if anyone calls it progressive house I’ll stab the cunt

The Feeling (of Warmth and Beauty). Aural accompaniment to purple ohms, rain and more rain

Soul Catcher’s alright, except what follows (World War Three) is a gooey, neck-tension releasing moment of bliss prescient of woke metaphors

Electronic Eye - Closed Circuit. Slept on four disc release going for a oner on discogs, my crumbling copy survives just about preserved. Surveillance culture as percussion gem. Aces = Bush Channel Stepper, Datacrime (a longer version exists?) and Aquamarine Sheen. Latter blends a creepy, whipping, witchy synth touch that defies language. One of the very few to successfully marry paranoia and swing

@WashYourHands keep meaning to say this, met this guy lately cos he's going out with this girl I know. He's from Nottingham and used to hang out with DIY and (even more so I think) Smokescreen back in... well, I'm not totally sure when to the year. He's like 43 or 44 I guess and now he plays regularly at these Pizza Party raves in the Algarve (I think I mentioned them before - basically this old German hippy bought up some land and over the last few decades constructed something that reminds me a bit of the Ewok village in Return of the Jedi in that it's loads of walkways and wooden paths amongst the trees, although unlike the one in the film it has two big stages where they hold these parties - the lower one they play stuff like hardcore, gabber, jungle, acid techno while on the other one they tend to have things like someone else playing gabber or jungle etc - well I'm being unfair, I've only been once). I'm sure you guys would know some of the same people, maybe even each other... his name is Ricky anyhow, seems like a nice fella. Hopefully at some point in the next few months once it gets a bit warmer I'll try and get a few people to organise themselves enough and we will go down there and catch him spinning, then spend the next day recovering on the beach I suppose.
