the other thing as rich has said is that there is basically nothing to do. I'm kind of amazed by how normal it was to go and sit in fields, wander around footpaths, sit at the bus stop.
Yeah, there would be kids come in to school and go "we wanked off a donkey yesterday" and I'd say "oh".

Bit of a con that the lyrics don't even mention Uffington though, there must be thousands if not millions of people who listen to that cos they want to hear a song about Uffington and then it turns out to not even be about Uffington at all, it's basically fake news.
I think maybe I will get a tattoo of the Uffington white horse on my shoulder, show some pride in where I came from.

er.....yeah so the rural bits of england. one of the other things I think is interesting about that is that culturally speaking, in terms of representation in various media I mean, it flies under the radar. It's like the opposite of being from California. there's no media reflecting your world back at you, no stereotypes, nothing like that. there is the idea of the 'home counties' and in films made by people from London they sometimes go out and visit the contryside, and obviously rural northern england is well represented as well, but the poor bits of the south outside the cities are just totally absent from everything (except Black Mirror interestingly)
dunno if you remember that "landfill indie" list that VICE did that people were skewering, i thought all the songs on it were terrible then and now but that stuff and the Artic Monkeys i'll admit captured something about living in those parts of the south of England, it was like the last gasp of that world getting any kind of real attention before it all got so London focused (and myopic depending on who you ask)

I mean it's funny a friend of mine whose the lead singer in this metalcore band decided one year to go Download festival after having not gone for years and she posted some status expressing her shock about how there's youts who think they're the coolest kids in the village because they rock Chuck taylors and listen to volbeat, meanwhile i'm sitting here and thinking yes...yes they do how is it that i don't have any connection to this stuff and i "get it" better than you?

On that note especially when you think about how rappers have taken a greater presence in music festivals in this country these days as Crowl brought up in some convo we had with some people Drake curating his own festival has alot to do with it all of a sudden the geriatrics running these thing realised that black people actually had disposable income and weren't just chinging each other and speaking in indecipherable slang so out goes all the mid-level indie bands who haven't meant fuck all in forever and in goes all the crooning rappers rocking Montclair and Armani that Barty loves so much

The idea that "millions" are listening to HMHB to learn about Uffington is hysterical, mate there's a lyric about the '85 Luton Town/Millwall riot how many Americans do you really thingk are going to understand that? it's not fake news ya dunce

lots of house parties though
this also i've heard about how in order to keep the youts off the streets from getting into crime they'd stick em in a pub and play the big tunes of the day and leave there to figure out their own fun, person who told me about this was from Stowmarket

There was always one pub in our town that served anyone from age 13 up, without any hassle from the police. It wasn't always the same pub, but there was always one. It was like an unspoken rule to keep the peace and stop teenagers vandalising things out of sheer desperate boredom

Does it feel like this kind of empty bored/trapped with nothing to do has escaped from these kinda small towns and is now in the wider parts of the world? or at least in UK/USA

Er that was a joke.
The other day Sonic Boom asked where I was from and I said I grew up in Uffington and he said "Oh yeah that hipster newsletter thing Uffington Post" - he wasn't joking though, just getting mixed up.

I think more or less everyone could go to the pub from when they were like 16, unless you had the misfortune to look particularly young. That was a good system.

sorry to bring this breh up but came across this
Talking about runnin down on ops in thomas the tank trainers and all this i'm not trying to say he's any less black or anything but it just reeks of a put on "i might be from the village but i know who the real drillers are" like he ain't comfortable in his own skin. The fact that he has the gall to call himself a "satirist" makes it worse.

No worries, I mean I personally was disappointed to find out that there is a song about Uffington... and then two minutes later, to find out it doesn't mention the place. But I can well imagine that I'm the only person in the world who cares.

Especially with trump and the eu refferendum there's been more of this focus since then on "forgotten people" well forgotten white people the jobs that aren't there the kids who have fuck all to do but listening to middling indie bands/pop punk and shoot up skag and drink scrumpy jack in the park the anger they have at city dwellers like myself who feel like their constantly condescended to(and like wise some of the people who did a full 180 and bought into the rhetoric put out by reactionary forces), people leaving from those towns to gentrify cities and then look back in horror when their towns vote conservative. Kids putting their energy into stuff like donk or trying to be Aitch cause if not they'd be doing home invations i want to get deep inna dis.

I find it interesting that the UK has managed to create this sense of the powerful urban elite versus the forgotten and left-behind towns given that it's such a small place in absolute terms. I mean, even leaving aside the fact that most people in Newham or Moss Side don't have much more in common with the actual elites than people in Sutton-in-Ashfield or wherever, it's just a bit weird that the geographical distances between metropolitan centres and the small towns that they're supposed to be disconnected from tend to be on the order of 30-50 miles at most, which is absolutely fuck-all when you compare it to the US idea of "flyover country" where people are literally hundreds of miles from the big urban cultural and economic hubs.

Let's Talk About Ceps
Small town (actually small village) is very much me... but, this is what I think makes it particularly boring in places like this in the UK, there are no drugs as far as I know. I can't really be saying "I wish Uffington had had a heroin problem" but there is just... nothing.
Almost a shame, since you'd be hard pressed to think of a more appropriate place in which to ride the white horse.
