internet natives and their pathologies

im young and I grew up with the net like many here. I learned to browse files and load up games on my dad's laptop before I could even read. but I was reading hacking's looping kinds and it got me thinking-- what might be some pathologies associated with being hooked up 24/7 to the internet since a child? it's gotta affect development somehow. separately but related, do you think my generation will be diagnosed with new kinds of disorders?

maybe its because i am not too aware of myself but what does it mean to be aware of oneself. isn't that just a thing that comes with getting old?

what do you mean by self-awareness. the latter i agree with, though only in part.
I mean people becoming increasingly conscious of their physical appearance due to being bombarded with images of other people.

It was happening prior to the internet, but it's gone up a few notches with the arrival of things like Instagram. There's an intense focus on tiny details and things people never used to know or care about that much, e.g. incels obsessing over things like wrist size and canthal tilt.

makes sense, although i do think the internet has offered more/different kinds of body standards.
Yet cosmetic surgery's becoming increasingly common and there's now a thing called 'Instagram Face' because so many women want the same look.

Good question @toko . Look at plastic surgery rates. Performative practice too, see males and petulant feuding - Sam Hyde v IDubzzz, Frank Hassle turning up outside your gaff, Baked Alaska, list goes on

20 months into working from home is a net enough, as parents the wife and I limit times online for the brood. There’s learning and then there’s sloth. With 4 boys between late teen and a 5 year old, if any of them ask about estrogen blockers I‘ll know we’re in the shit

The mental effects of the internet get most of the focus, but the physical side is stuff like dry eyes, carpal tunnel syndrome, blood clots, back problems due to poor posture.

There's a bit in that Lyotard essay I posted earlier where he says,

"... one of the essential objectives of research today is to overcome the obstacle that the body places in the way of the development of communicational technologies... "

I don't think anything we can identify will be unique to the internet. Everything will just be an intensification, e.g. what I was saying about Instagram also applying to TV, film and magazines a few decades ago.
i know im always saying this but you read jamesons post modernism book and all the things youd assume were created by the internet are the things he's describing.

Yeah, I said the same about modern novelists struggling to write about the effects of the internet because Burroughs, Pynchon, Gaddis, DeLillo, etc. nailed it before it had even arrived.

knowing what your face looks like from every angle. knowing what the back of your head looks like. knowing what you look like on video. that kind of transparency that's provided by ubiquitous photos and filming, your face in the mirror of the webcam, all of that

quantification of the body
as well as the fragmentation of it caused by limits of the camera lens, if you've ever tried to take a photo of yourself with both your face and genitals visible you know what I'm talking about

I remember reading some poor bastard's anecdote about realising he was balding after catching the back of his head on CCTV at the supermarket.
