Linebaugh is a certified man of literature... Not just one of those DFW DeLillo Kerouac Pynchon entry level guys. He's got Vollmann, Gass (The Tunnel!), Gaddis. He's got The Golden Bough (not well known in America!). He's got smatterings of French theory (Derrida, Foucault). He does appear to have the Gravity's Rainbow "companion" rather than GR proper, idling next to a Brene Brown paperback, but any man has his lapses

All his books are doorstops. You know how most people have a set of doorstops but they're sandwiched between slimmer novels and novellas they've actually read? Linebaugh only has 800+ pgers, wall to wall, and they're all dog-eared to oblivion

Basically he's a giant nerd don't let his cool guy act here fool you

Yesterday I drove for hours through an ice storm to get to his hood. We were a convoy going 30mph on the I-90 through a wall of white. On the sides of the road were wrecks of cars who had passed by earlier, dotted occasionally by the blue and red of police lights. You'd watch a giant Ford or Ram, a $72k truck that can haul a semi, spin out crazily in front of you, clipping the other cars in the convoy. You just gripped the wheel harder and pumped your breaks as you slid across the ice that encased the roads. Sports cars—you know with those racing stripes and tails? Or else like a nice new Porsche or Mustang IDK my sports cars apart but I know a sports car when I see em—would merge onto the highway at top speed, pushing 70mph, no idea what the ice conditions were like. Those guys provided the convoy our only entertainment, launched wildly into ditches and medians.

Linebaugh is a a good person, we all knew he was a cool dude but I keep thinking about how he went out of his way to find a trashcan for his cigarette butt. A man of principles & honor.
One of my friends has a portable ashtray that he takes with him everywhere, I'm thinking I should get one myself.

Well... normally I'm more of a social smoker in that I only buy a pack (or two maybe) if I'm going out, I will smoke them over the course of the evening and then I will smoke any that are left at home but not buy any more until I next go out. Lately I have been smoking a lot more for some reason so I've been tending to buy a pack every day or two even if I'm not going out.
