The Ideas Train
Bong Bing got pretty big on TikTok and Cristale was out in Jamaica a few weeks ago, so I think we'll see more tracks in that vein soon.

but then again @shakahislop i have to ask you do your mates even understand patwa cause all even now i've come across people one or two of them who live in Britian who say that they have no idea what people are saying

and its a funny thing where you see people enjoying a tune because of the riddim but as far as the lyrics is going on they don't know what's being said but you do and it feels like you're tapped into a hidden frequency
Most people I know don't know what patois is, they'd probably think it was a misspelling of 'patio'

we might have to quarantine this discussion in our other thread, but i think Drake did do something new for a little while, although you're probably referring to something specific
yes lets do that, but in regards to this conversation it's not that i don't disregard your concerns but at the same time its like i'm reminded of a comment somebody made where they said every 10 years or so the music industry remembers that the Caribbean exists(and with the way things are going it looks like the focus is gonna be more of afrobeats) and then after that you notice pop songs start sounding vaguely "tropical" and inviting some of them might even try to throw in some bad patois and get credit and praise for shit people over there have been doing for ages.

Right now Jamaica's up in arms over the grammies cause some band of white guys from Arizona won the best reggae award and next to tourism the music is it's biggest cutural export i get it and i see people are having handwrining discussions over "trap dancehall" and the state of the industry but i cannot give a shit

I'm hearing something more wide open and expansive in some of the recent stuff like Jayblem's Neva Lie, even Whap and something like this

And this new Jayblem one

Oh and Neva Lie has a video now.
MURDAH HIM OFFSPRING

Squashes new one is wicked, he rarely disappoints

Men E Place Nice is still riddim of the year so far for me, there's loads of versions of it now, collected here. Could listen to that all day

Otherwise things have definitely gone a bit too mushy recently, lyrical content aside.

One more, something a bit different from Roze Don

Is this in here? Been listening to it loads the last couple weeks

This sound is quite fun but it's not really dancehall is it? It sounds African, via dancehall obviously, but the so called trap stuff is more proper dancehall to me, even though there's so many complaints about it being too similar to US rap from the old guard. This kind of stuff always lacks the extreme autotune/pitch shifting fuckery of the trap stuff too (and the gun chat). Dunno, something about it just doesn't sit right with me. The fact it's been a tiktok smash says a lot as well

One more for tonight. Exotic asian flute riddim, pretty low key but Chronic Law never dissapoints

....

Laa Lee is Jamaican, no? I do see your point but I much prefer the energy in this to the Trap stuff personally, which can get a bit dreary to me

There is a proper video now, they shot it in Jamaica just to annoy you ha

Yeah Laa Lee is Jamaican and Cristale is from London, apparently, I'd not heard of her. I just meant that it sounds more African influenced to me. I don't hate it really, just a matter of taste I suppose.

hey @shakahislop as far as the homophobia in bashment, has anybody ever brought up to you the fact that aswell as the influence of the church(and buggery laws put in place long before independance) there was a particularly rife period of sex tourism in the 80s and i wanna say early 90s where alot of BAD stuff to kids happened?

Can definitely see that if you're into afrohouse and stuff Laa Lee would be much more appealing than the trap dancehall gear. Horses for courses isn't it? All good.

Sure this is old as the hills news here but I like this a lot, although there's nothing distinctive about it at all really. Generic as fuck. But I like the way their different voices play off against each other.
