i mean Yeezus the thing with it is it's not new unless you never heard that kind of music that kind of harsh music and confrontational vibe that he was going for there were underground people who were making that kind of music before him but because it wasn't him or anybody on a major they didnt care so him and Jay Z who at the time had that Magna Carta holy grail album out were seen as pioneers of "art rap" even though somebody like Open Mike Eagle was calling his music that back in like 2010 @shakahislop.

Its how he was able to combine that, dancehall, drill and one or two other things into a singular mix that made it "new"

i was listening to a lot of noise and doom metal at the time it came out. there was something about what he did on Yeezus that reminded me of Whitehouse in particular. not that it sounds particularly like Whitehouse overall, but there were bits of it, particularly the bits where it felt like he was trying to make it sonically unpleasant for the listener, where that was my closest reference point. as usual i think, it's the way that these other things that have already been done by other people are assembled, which is what you're saying as well.

i just made up the term 'art rap' this week, i don't care what Open Mike Eagle thinks about it, that was me

btw @shakahislop you didn't answer my thing on how you like Kendricks but outside of a few songs you turn away from Nas
i just find Nas boring. all of it basically, including Illmatic that everyone else in the world seems to love. the only thing i like about Nas is pointing out the Queensbridge Houses to people when they come to visit, coz you go right past them on one of the main bridges. but then i find Wu Tang Clan and everyone involved except maybe ODB essentially boring.

i'm not the right age to find it sonically exciting (coz it already sounded a bit old school when I was 20 or whatever) and a lot of that older hiphop 'canon' has bad associations for me, not that that should matter but it does a little bit, a lot of it makes me think of people who essentially like guitar music who think that they should like some hiphop as well. it was always the more middle class kids that went to university who were listening to it.
