I once worked "somewhere" and a lot of the people on the "help desk" were a bit younger than me, and they were into UK garage and dubstep, etc., but they lost their shit when I played this "sound art" in the office... heavy as fuck bass.. combines sub bass with an oppressive momentum, like trying to slowly and laboriously chip your way through a glacier and getting nowhere

Reminds me of the Concrete Fence stuff Regis and Russell Haswell did.

How do you mean misjudged? Just that the reaction wasn't as you hoped? You can always claim that the first one was just a kind of palate cleaner after the dj changeover I reckon, a free one where there is no pressure to make them dance.

yeah, you've nailed it - I normally warmed up for the "free party sound system", but on this occasion I was on at a "peak" hour, and when I put the Kabaka Pyramid song on, which builds on a classic reggae riddim and has sirens to boot, I hoped they'd love it as much as me, but it was a young crowd and though they shuffled, they weren't loving it as much as I was, but in retrospect it built tension to the point that when I dropped the Promised land rhythm and that bass line hit they just went fucking wild, and from that point on I had them in the palm of my hand...I just threw on soundbwoy killer after soundbwoy killer and they lost it... probably the highlight of my playing records in public...

edit: so, with the benefit of hindsight, actually a genius move on my part

Years ago I remember there was this "uk bass scene" that was getting some hype as a kind of Uk response to... well, to ghettotech and the like I suppose. As far as I can tell it never really took off cos I stopped hearing about it pretty soon afterwards (although maybe I'm totally wrong and it's massive and all you lot have been into it for years, raving to it every weekend, feel free to educate me if so).

The only names I can remember were Cutlass Supreme and this guy Debasser. I don't even know what the former did but Debasser had a big tune called Fat Girls and, checking his stuff out, it all seems to be variations on that track with these sort of funky heavy basslines between breakbeats. Sounds nothing like the US stuff it was being compared to to my ears but maybe they meant it was similar in "spirit" in that it was fast bass music with loads of childish lyrics about tits and sex.



Can't imagine something like that going down too well these days. And maybe that is no bad thing cos it is kind of mean spirited. There is one girl who comes to our gigs every time in Porto, like she always gets there right at the start and stays to the end. She is a bigger girl and I was thinking that if I played something like that then I would feel like I was taking the piss out of her.. and then I thought that if there is a record which I play and it crosses my mind that it might make someone feel bad then maybe I shouldn't be playing it at all. Not that I was gonna play that anyway but you know what I mean.

"When I played Berlin in 2005, before the first Tectonic Plates had been released, I had Skream's 'Bahl Fwd' on dubplate. I played in this weird venue, which was set in a bank vault and still had a caged-off safety deposit box room and everything: very small, with very thick walls and a decent soundsystem. While I was DJing, Jammer and his crew passed through, and when someone got on the mic this weird shit started happening. .. That tune is one of the heaviest dubstep tracks that's ever been cut, because he didn't have any EQ on the bass: full power, untouched bass."

One of my golden memories from 2006 or whenever it was was going to a student house party in Nottingham where they had a proper soundsystem in the living room and my mate played Bahl FWD and the walls were shaking.

Another was another student Nottingham party where they had an even bigger rig in a backgarden and this was playing as the police arrived in a riot van – while a local Nottingham MC was singing that Sizzla tune "Rastaman don't apologise to no batty boy!"


I do miss the bass tickling my nostrils, you can't replicate that listening to shit at home

Big wobble vibes from the synth bass on this. I heard it on a system once and it nearly shook the walls down.

I reckon you have a bit of leeway there.... but if after four or five tracks they are still not dancing., then claiming you want to make sure that that palate is really good and cleansed probably won't wash.

not that i play out (i mean i would love to, what a dream that would be, hard to imagine anyone would want to listen to me start and stop songs on itunes though) but have a similar issue with that vybz kartal tune romping shop, which is just fucking brilliant, a pinnacle of love slash sex songs, totally joyous, but has this unmistakable right up front right at the start of the tune bit of very unsubtle anti-gay bit. so to play it anywhere in public or not? the answer obviously is to not.

Yeah when you start putting yourself in the position of someone on the receiving end it's hard to see them as harmless fun suddenly.

One thing like that which really hit me was someone talking about epilepsy. I suddenly realised how many forms I'd filled in over the years with a box I'd always easily skipped past... but imagine if you had to tick it...

i heard a tune out last night which was pretty standard techno beat but which had a foghorn sweeping around the mix, it was pretty great

i like this but i get the feeling he's tried to pile in 10 or 12 of the heaviest ever basslines in a bit of a rush. more like the HEAVIEST bass noise EVER than the HEAVIEST bassline

the start of that dmz set i listened to started off with someone starting and stopping reggae songs so i reckon your of to a good start
hard to imagine anyone would want to listen to me start and stop songs on itunes though
