Ketamine and busy roads sound like a combination best avoided.

reminds me of a story I heard about a hardcore ket head, like he ignored the fact that he was pissing blood and strings of tissue from his bladder hardcore, who had to drive to various locations as part of his job but would have to regularly pull over to the lay-by to snort another bump... it can be "treacherous on road, fam"..

Christ. I have a mate whose brother used to mainline the stuff, apparently. Think he got off it before any permanent damage was done. Hope to god he never tried driving on it.

the guy who I faked the "academic institution" notepaper for so he could order boxes of ampoules of ketalar used to administer intramuscular doses on himself but at least he was only sitting on the couch and watching TV

I remember seeing those posters up around UCL at the time, asking for volunteers, but they wanted people who hadn't taken it before and I didn't want to mess up their data. More fool me, I guess.

What was it like? Compared to railing it, I mean?

I went to get some for a mate once and decided to sneak a bit on the way back. Just before we went in I told the mate I'd gone with to 'be cool' then I went straight in and lay on the floor in the kitchen for an hour.
If 'cool' is a synonym for 'laid back', then I suppose you were leading by example.

The emotional memory test stuff was clearly a ruse. The real purpose of the experiment was "Is @woops a massive potential K-head?"

Interesting and I suppose disturbing article. The hand in hand of psychedelic fascism.

The thing that strikes me is that idea of "bringing something back". And how this new breed of psychonaut think of themselves as astronauts (this article linked to in the one version posted https://newrepublic.com/article/169525/psychonauts-training-psychedelics-dmt-extended-state)

I've been on maybe 10 trips in the last 2 or 3 months, but I've realised now that all bar a couple were very low dose, probably pointless really, and combined with alcohol so not proper at all.

But the last one, exhausted after a day of painting thd lounge, and having had a couple of beers with a friend, a really pleasant evening, so just grabbed a handful, but then made a point of going outside. And there was a point where I was on the sofa, and looking at this little monkey god from India I've put upon the light, hanging from the ceiling, and I had this feeling he was looking at me in judgement. And I went very swiftly from a place of careless mirth to a place of sadness, but then had the feeling that it was just me doing it all, my will, and I could take myself back.

And thinking back to my experience with the tincture in 2020, which did feel high dose in that it stopped me in my tracks, I struggled to walk, took 3 hours to do a journey that is normally 45 mins. how I got this sort of feeling that phones and technology were OK, that you could think of them in the same way as you think of leaves. How that all fed into my unexpected fascination with trees (I think I was unknowingly engaging in forest bathing during the early days of the pandemic, when I was visiting the forest and magic tree several times a week).

I was listening to a mckenna lecture the other day while painting and he was saying the low dose is the worst thing people Dan do. I think luke and third have also made that point.

But the other thing is about the connection with something real world, what the article says about the psychedelic tradition in indeginous cultures being rooted in a tradition of some sort, which of course is the bit that we unmoor as unnecessary when we Jack it up now.

Words of caution.

Without reading the article, the chances of capitalism and our benevolent pharma overlords not fucking it up and bringing it all in line with their usual shenanigans is slim to none. Like all the studying at Johns Hopkins rn with Roland Griffiths et al trying to resynthesize psilocybin with the aim of making a pill which gives you more or less the same results every time so that it's acceptable in the eyes of science completely defeats the whole lesson you're being taught by psychs. Certainty and safety is not what that shit is about. They've been used successfully in their natural state for thousands of years. The important thing is the prep and choice of moment. Ofc it can go wrong but most of the time that's due to negligence.

But science always knows best eh?

@catalog I think McKenna is saying that the heroic dose is necessary to have the sense of control rug swept from under your feet. To fully let go requires a bit of a battering ram approach because the ego always gets in the way. It never wants to fully relinquish control. It can be a rough ride, but on the other side of that is some of the most profound beauty and deep learning about existence and all the rest you're ever likely to experience. It only makes sense that that shit doesn't come for free. Prep is key. Set and setting.

Otoh, a lower dose can be fun and still give you all kinds of beneficial treats. Sense of connection to everything, new layers of perception, wiggly visuals. Not to be sniffed at.

But, if you're wanting full on ego death and to really see the other side you have to pay the piper. The good thing is it's not necessary to do it several times. Once can be enough. You can put the phone down once you get the message as Alan Watts used to say.

Yeah I don't think I ever did a heroic dose, maybe I had something approaching it when I took too much ketamine at boomtown one year and thought I was gonna die, or when I had 2ce and thought a motorway crash happened under my body in the bed.
