    good books on FOLK

Hi Derek I guess most of my research has been into the traditional side... - I've thumbed through those Childs ballads etc. - one book I do return to quite often is A L Lloyd's 'Folk Song In England', though it may be a bit too dry/musicological for what you're after. Have a look at it anyway...

    good books on FOLK

Depends what you're after Derek - there are plenty (well, at least a few) good books out there on folk, but what particular approach do you want? Musicological? 60s/70s folk rock? Traditional? etc..

    loop

I recently realised that much as I was a complete Sp*3 nerd in my late teens, I enjoy Loop much more these days. They were so monolithic. A Gilded Eternity is their peak - one of the greatest rock records. Yeah it was monomaniacal, but in the best possible way, and no other record *sounds* like...

    The Smiths

Funny thing about this is I've always felt this was where the whole Ed Ball/Dan Treacy etc school really came through, that Morrissey picked up on how TV Personalities eulogised this particular side of Britain - you just have to listen to songs like "Favourite Films" (a list of Treacy's...

What PostPunk has RIU&SA make you drolly over?

Haha yeah true my fuck up, 'Hark the Village Wait' is the first (w/the Woods), Carthy on 'Please to See...' the second, and 'Ten Man Mop'. That three-record run by far the greatest Steeleye. I rate this period Steeleye so much more than anything else. Though I was surprised by how much I enjoyed...

    R. Stevie Moore

Wow, two threads on R Stevie Moore, not bad. You might want to check the earlier one: http://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php?t=1655 I rate "What's The Point???", insofar as a) it's one of the ones I've heard and b) I remember it being eminently enjoyable. But I've not listened to RSM for a while.

    steven r. smith

Derek you knew I'd pipe up here didn't you... ...but Steven is maybe the best of the whole batch. I think he's quite separate to the free-folk thing actually. In retrospect Thuja are much closer to stuff like Mirror or AMM, though grittier sounding than either. The Hala Strana stuff is amazing...

Do any internationally known musicians come here?

I liked "Figure 8" a lot. One of the Blindside singles was good, too. Hey at least it wasn't Afterglow! (chuckles) I actually found the Jupiter 12" in the dance/techno section of Red Eye yesterday. That seemed kinda like wishful thinking you know.

Do any internationally known musicians come here?

This is all saying THE EARTHMEN to me loud and clear but I could well be wrong. (It's the 'Creation wannabe' that makes me think of JR's Summershine label.)

Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice

Haven't heard it yet. The new Vashti Bunyan is nice!

Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice

Alright, def. try "XIAO" on De Stijl/Troubleman and "Angel Hair" CDR on Chocolate Monk. THe Wooden Wand solo CD on Soft Abuse is really good. There have been countless CDRs/tapes, I have not heard all, but all are surely worth hearing for a sense of the 'big picture'. James Toth of Wooden Wand...

one more post in agreement, moose were amazing, particularly their whole 'astral country' thing circa "reprise"/"xyz". incredible stuff.
