    Painting

I went to the early renaissance galleries in the National the other day and although they’ve been buried away in a dingy basement area (rehanging/ refurb reasons apparently) they were just magnificent- Cimabue, Masaccio, Lippi, Piero - I think it helped it was so quiet. It meant that I could...

    callous love or careless love

I think he has to be a bit of one to allow that itch to lead him where it needs to go and not question it. A cleverer bloke would be full of doubt - he lets it take him. Which means he’s made a few stinkers in his time but I’d still trust him to pull off something remarkable

    callous love or careless love

Speaking about yourself in the third person! And it wasn’t a pop at you. I just think rhyming is really hard - it can sound so contrived so often.

    Joni Mitchell worship thread

That’s not true about Blue but I do think it unlocks something that allows for Hissing/Hejira/Don J to occur. The voice is distinctly different from For the Roses - there’s a confidence and assertion that wasn’t quite there before and a quality of playing that opens up towards that electric...

    callous love or careless love

Whilst I think Dylan does a good line in callous love in his work here it has to be careless love - it’s what he’s experienced not what he’s given. Later he says Situations have ended sad, Relationships have all been bad. Mine've been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud. But there's no way I can...

    Poetry

Oh no! I don’t do explaining outside of the classroom. I liked the poem’s fuzziness, the way it gestures towards without being firmly anchored. An early morning bleary feeling mixed with a certain joy in small things like the smell of coffee. I’m currently in Catania airport having spent a week...

    When My Ship Comes In

I was listening to a version of Dark Star the other day and thought that if Can had made it people would be all over it.

    what are you reading now?

I think it’s the perfect way to read it - the cadences, the voices, it’s a bravura performance. I helped crowdfund his new one that’s coming out via Unbound again - I still find it a mystery that it didn’t get any real traction - not even a sniff of a prize like the Goldsmiths.

    Rolling Rugby Thread

I suppose along with the sudden improvement of England, Ireland once more choking in a big match and Wales woeful performances is the rise of Italy - long overdue and often been on the wrong side of tight results but this season coming good. Reminiscent of the French in the 70s that mixture of...
