Yep:

"It is important to know that the evidence of the benefit of using a face covering to protect others is weak and the effect is likely to be small, therefore facecoverings are not a replacement for the other ways of managing risk"

https://www.hse.gov.uk/coronavirus/ppe-face-masks/face-coverings-and-face-masks.htm

"Wearing a face covering is optional in most circumstances and is generally not required in workplaces. They are not an effective way to manage the risks from coronavirus and you should not rely on them. "
Thanks, I think your quotes covered it, but nice to have a place to dig deeper.

Do you think the media should keep pushing masks? Just as a placebo stabilization tactic?

Yeah, but then my ma would think she is at far more risk than she really is and would be correspondingly anxious.

you're conflating age with underlaying health problems. I think we're talking about elderly folks with pre-existing conditions, not just elderly folks.

I think they introduced the (essentially voluntary) mask wear to ease the reintroduction of the anxious into society (many of whom had been scared witless by the scare-mongering publicity targeted at the diametrically opposite tranche of completely unconcerned people)...also perhaps to explain why the stats keep getting better despite the loosening of lockdown (rather than the stats getting better because they're describing a natural dwindling of the virus).

If they do things then they can pretend that positive outcomes are a result of what they've done; if they don't do anything, they can't.

The government have tried pretty much everything - most of it incompetently - in vain attempts at looking in charge.

Solid analysis. I hadn't even thought about any crossfire of messaging (people who do take it seriously becoming more and more anxious due to the messages directed at those who do not take it seriously).

The government's psychology advisors said the same, but with reference to the small proportion of the population who would otherwise not take it seriously at all (this is in the SAGE minutes). Believe me, my mum is quite capable of being sufficiently anxious without any encouragement.

It's also immoral to change behaviour by lying.
Im stateside where cases are spiking so we may be talking about different things. From what I surmise, masks do little but prevent the direction of breath down peoples mouths, but that still has efficacy.
And Im not sure we can call it lying, rather just being cautious in the face of an unknown scenario. The sensationalism that could be called lying isnt coming from health officials. Though there seems to be as much dishonesty in the pushing of masks and social distancing as a cure all to justify irresponsible business practice than sensationalism of the severity of the disease.

Nothing against your Mum but I'm not sure the world can design its whole response around her. Clearly it should be designed around me.
It's also immoral to change behaviour by lying.
Is it though? I'm not saying you're wrong but I'm not sure that's completely obvious and settled.

You think he's telling the truth? I wouldn't put it past him to pretend he has it and go "See, I'm fine! Nothing to worry about!".

I didn't pay attention, did Boris pull that? wonder if he has any lingering effects. think I mentioned previously I know a 30-something woman in decent shape who "recovered" back in late may but suffers decreased lung capacity, gets winded walking five blocks.

I totally wouldn't put it past him to lie and then do a video of him boxing or something... on the other hand, he aint exactly been cautious has he.

That's really funny, and now you don't have to post it here because we already know what happens. Great work!
