Nice, haven't heard of Geertz. And I just got a copy of the Prince but I haven't opened it. I wonder how worth reading it is.

Well yes and no. Its political philosophy, or polical thought. But I would say A l ot of peolel in this thread are not strictly speaking philosophers

I would feel fine slapping the label "political philosopher" onto him, and philosopher more generally. That said, I haven't read him nor am I familiar to any real extent.

The only one i'd sack off and not bother with is hobbes but ironically he is probably most responsible for the current British setup

I've only read Poetics, did you have other aristotle in mind?

And I love what dialogues I've read by Plato. Only Protagoras, Meno and Euthyphro. Really enjoyable. And its close to ground level so there isn't this chain/heritage of references.
Yeah this is what I liked about plato and aristotle, it's all first principles thought experiments, chatting with mates, I was really surprised by how accessible it was

I was enamored with the dialogue with Protagoras. Just how smooth so much of it was. And in all three I've read, the other person eventually gets pissed at Socrates for being so, uh, dialectical. Very funny. It's like he wears out his welcome in the conversation.

With all this talk of penises I thought for a moment we were still talking about vimothy.
We could have a penis thread. I saw an article on The Guardian the other day about how phallic/misogynistic a skyline full of skyscrapers is.

The last two letters of the headline being cut off is perfect:

'Upward-thrusting buildings ejaculating into the sky' – do cities have to be so sexi...
