why is ambient so popular now

yeah, that's why I posted it. it's a recording of Budd playing solo piano in memory of his late friend Jim Tenney.

The two tendencies in 'ambient' - experimental avant performance and amorphous chill muzak out are practically diametric opposites.

Noise is not meditative.

not in terms of crossing your legs and sinking into yourself, and chanting om with a mix of incense and a hippy's smelly socks wafting at your nostrils but it is def meditative in the all consuming spinning vortex turning the world upside down, accelerated typhoon sense. Static everything is infinitely preferable to the static nothingness of medieval surfdom.

agree, noise music has to be heard coming out of a big speaker larger than life whereupon it will take on a totally different dimension which is as close to meditative as listening to mellow tones washing through you on your hi fi headphones. i think

For me it's because of confined living space. Bedroom listening. Getting older. No house parties for me. A conservative time and the antidote to it. There's still only one or maybe two producers I like listening to and that's Rod Modell. I have his album Dawn, Dusk and Darkness with pictures of Barcelona and it's deep. There's the field recording element to it that grounds it in the real but he put out this sample CD for example. Most of it's a bunch a sounds from cool synths but if you listen to tracks like Thought Experiment, there's some thought put into the music too... not just one note drones with some glitchy sounds thrown in and on the other hand definitely not new age-y.
