Beast of Burden
If you could all stop bickering for a moment, you might notice something important just happened: Vimothy made an endorsement.

whats striking about it is how thin it is and how unsatisfying an account of the visceral pleasures of violence and sadism it provides

I do understand it though. for whatever reason putting '-[authors name]' at the end of a quote makes me feel like a knob
Think it's partly because it looks as though you don't expect anyone else to recognise it. That, and it makes it look like namedropping.

what woops was moaning about wasnt so much the lack of a name it was the quotes themlseves. he thinks you should put more of a shift in, a actually do some graft

I know, but I wasn't responding to Woops. I was responding to Linebaugh's point about feeling like a knob sticking someone's name after a quote.

you can read this essay (actually a repro of the paper, "the first stone", with a bunch of typos thrown in) if you're interested in getting a flavour for girard's thought: https://mimetictheory.com/articles/casting-the-first-stone-by-rene-girard/
I've just read this essay.

He says Jesus says to the crowd "let him with no sin cast the first stone" in a quiet, non-confrontational way, but essentially reminding them of the law they all know.

So this dissipates the violence, cos there's no bloodlust to imitate.

And then he contrasts this with another story, in Epheseus, where another preacher convinces the crowd to stone a beggar, even though they're a bit hesitant at first. He achieves it by egging them on.

That seems to be it really. It's got quite a religious tone, he seems quite Christian?

Very long winded style of writing, but I also like it, it's very patient and exact.

Basically about the pile on.

but note that it's also a very sociological sort of christianity. a "real" christian might object that this has little to do with genuine revelation. it's about the effect on society not whether jesus was the son of god or whatever.
