    New Post-Punk Outweighs Old

I love that Black Leotard Front song, the whole of DFA Comp 2 really, but that one's my favorite thing they've ever released, pretty much.

I must say, though, that considering how many litmus tests seem to be applied to this album on here, partly but not limited to the "if you aren't completely involved with a scene from the word go and aren't paying PROPAH homage to the folks who PROPAH-ly make it in its PROPAH setting, your...

    More MIA

I like that--I "ran the script." No, I heard a record, had no back knowledge about it, and came to a conclusion based entirely on what I was hearing. If that's lazy or non-committal, oh fucking well.

    Fave Lyrics of 2004

Mine are from a freestlye on (I think) a So So Def mixtape, by Ludacris: "2004, the world needs more lesbians/And more drunk drivers to hit drunk pedestrians."

    Psychedelic Sounds of West Africa

yeah, there's a Luaka Bop comp (I read about it on Jeff Chang's blog and had seen/heard one of the tracks off an MP3 blog, forget which one--not Jeff's he doesn't upload MP3s) as well as the Normal one; they're separate.

    M.I.A. -- "Galang" on XL

to me it sounds like a girl group record--as in "Iko Iko" not "Say My Name."

Mixtape-only tracks that deserve wider recognition

I like Kanye & Common's "Better Than Yours" and especially So So Def ft. Ludacris' "Freestyle" ("2004, the world needs more lesbians/And more drunk drivers to hit drunk pedestrians")

    M.I.A. -- "Galang" on XL

one of my seven or eight favorite singles this year, easily. who CARES whether she ripped someone off? [haha cue loads of more-indignant-than-thou replies]

I can't imagine it's all that different from writing a good or an indifferent review; this stuff's out there, here's how it is, don't bother or do. and it's not a matter of being "forced," it's a matter of whether there's something interesting to say about something--that's a best-case scenario...

this isn't true at all. criticism isn't a function of the marketplace; it goes deeper than that. when I or most everyone else here talks about records, sometimes for print but even just on here, we're not doing it in a predictive or money-led fashion. we do it because we care about this stuff...

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about people who aren't now and never will be hipster intellectuals, or hipsters, or intellectuals, which isn't to say they don't know what's happening around them or they're not intelligent. But (and I'm thinking of a couple friends in particular)...

and actually, I do tend to find the f-f-f brigade tends not to do that--they want everyone to have a good time, including the dourpusses. that's why they're the f-f-f brigade to begin with. (I'm speaking very generally here, not really talking about Tortoise fans or nonfans or whatever.)

    Todd Edwards

Hi. I'm Michaelangelo, and I'm heading into my eighth year of Todd-mania. It all began with his remix of Mantra's "Away," which I heard on Tuff Jams Presents Speed Garage, a 1998 mix. I think that one's still my favorite. I saw him in 2001 (was that the same one you were at Simon? or are you...

also, I saw them backing Ze as well (I reviewed it for The Wire actually!) in Minneapolis and they were fantastic. the fact that they're smart people and really good musicians hampers them a bit, I tend to think--if there were some kind of wild-card element there (and I don't mean ProTools)...
