    Vinyl dying (for DJ's)

Looks like Chemical Records may be going down or at least restucturing: http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=276191&start=20

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

Latest update - so the couple of plants I've spoken to today have strongly advised against the 7" bass heavy dance idea. Fine for reggae, shit for beatmixing appears to be the consensus so 10"s it is. As for samples, still getting things together at the moment but once the remixes come in then...

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

@ Idle rich - for 10"s I was thinking about using Curved. I think the cost includes mastering by Lawrie Immersion of acid techno squat rave fame: http://curvedpressings.com/offers/12inch-10inch-vinyl/

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

Yep, I'm pretty sold on the concept of pressing 7"s, and the fact that both producers and listeners would have to work around its limitations. No reason not to apply these ideas to 10"s I suppose. One of these ideas, in some shape or form, coming to a blog / tumblr near you shortly...

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

I've only ever owned 2 - one from the Oink comic (home of Charlie Brooker's first writing gig) and a Manic Street Preachers album sampler from the NME in the early 90s. Both got trashed by poor attempts at scratching on my parents hifi standardly.

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

To be honest, I'd only be trying to change how 100 people DJ, and thats if I manage to sell them all ;) I've looked up costs for 10"s and its not that much more than a run of 7"s. I'm expecting to make a slight loss on pressing these anyway and will hopefully break even on the digital long...

It looks like there are still people out there who can: http://thewire.co.uk/news/23158/get-on-down-releasing-double-flexi-disc-dedicated-to-the-tr-909

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

I think thats a good call - 10"s it is then. Cheers for the input, its easy to go round in circles overthinking these things ;)

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

Thats true about the track lengths / volumes. The main reason I've been thinking about going for 7"s is that the 4 minute track time would force producers to cut the crap and concentrate their tunes to the essentials. So no 3 minute drum loop intro's, no pointless 2nd drops, no 128 bar...

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

The general plan for the label is to release quality underground tunes that just come in, do their thing once spectacularly and then end within 4 minutes. I'm hoping the time constraints could make for some interesting / unusual / very direct tracks, and the format could make people take notice...

Quick question re: 7"s in 2013

I'm thinking about pressing a couple of limited edition releases in a few months and I've been playing with the idea of doing limited edition 7"s, maybe 100 copies of each. Any of you who still play wax - would you play 7"s or are they too much of a ballache to mix?

rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread

:D That artwork is on a par with some of Virus records' 'finest' moments, which really takes some doing.
