Yeah that's pretty much what I did with most of them, you'd get those York Notes books and they would get you through no problem. .

I quite liked the Thomas Hardys I read especially Tess, but pretty depressing. His poetry's really where it's at though.

I picked up a copy of Emma the other day coincidentally. might give it a bash when I'm finished with the Iliad. I thought P&P was brilliant when I read it years ago, but like Corpsey I can't remember much now. Didn't think it would be your cup of tea Luka!

You should read this great essay by Owen Barfield on the history of the word 'ruin'. He traces its use all through the history of poetry, from the Greeks/Romans through Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Pope, Wordsworth, Tennyson etc. It's maybe only tangentially related to what you're on about...
