if that's your attitude then you probably think that it's a good thing to have more militarily trained people in the community? i don't, at all
drug gangs? how are they relevant?

militarism was at a relatively low ebb in uk before 9/11
now we have this cohort of 1000s of PTSDed squaddies - actual experienced killers of afghans and iraqis wandering about the streets :(

i remember you saying something similar about the refugees too. Veterans of combat in Somali and Kosovo and Nigeria and so on, actual killers walking suburban streets, buying milk in Costcutter.

Did a year straight from school. Got out on a medical. Barely an adult.

This much I know - ban service recruiters from attending all schools. That’s where I was sold (among others), backed by teaching staff essentially saying you’d amount to fuck all in civvy st anyway.

The myth they sell is eternal; self discipline, transferable skills, education, corps spirit, travel, be your best self, back your regiment who’ll be friends for life. Then you leave and Combat Stress just shrugs. And the tidiness thing never really lasts either. Tell Jordan cunting Peterson that.

Keith from Desert Storm sound system is a tale that will make anyone shudder. One of the most open, brave and honest people I’ve known. Hideous outcome. The rest is common sense. Nation states require governments who require standing armies to defend borders and protect vested interests. You’d think we’d have evolved a bit further than that by now.

Without obvious American bashing, their society’s worship and fetishisation of uniforms is the wedge, there are no thin ends. Just add a flag and a perceived enemy/grievance. Jocko Willinck‘s celebrity is a proper example of where that mentality leads. Not every veteran is a cunt, but Americanising these principles is an ugly business. Rates of homelessness and suicide are beyond a disgrace domestically, but the war pigs only exist through denial of all responsibility.

Everything defaults to ‘suck it up‘. He can’t see past the toxicity of militarism and as you say earnest platitudes only go so far if you volunteered to take part in and command the savagery seen at Ramadi.

If you want to get in shape or look into self defence, can’t argue with that line of advice, but there are limits.

not sure you remember correctly, but in any case the squaddies didnt have to happen, we chose to go to iraq and afghanistan,
unlike the refugees,
we're re-militarising society

Since 2012, the UK government has spent over £45 million on projects operating with a "military ethos" in schools in England. These include the use of outside companies such as Commando Joe's and the UK Mliitary School, often staffed by ex-forces personnel, to run programmes in schools. In the same year, ministers launched the Cadet Expansion Programme and by 2016 the number of state school cadet forces in the UK as a whole had more than doubled. In 2015, the government promised an extra £50million to increase the number of such forces to 500 by 2020. Mliitary visits to schools have also risen, with schools in poorer areas much more likely to be targeted.

The armed forces like to say that such activities are not about recruitment, but the Ministry of "Defence" gave the truth away in their Youth Engagement Review in 2011. They stated outright that the armed forces' engagment with young people should lead to two outcomes: "An awareness of the armed forces' role in the world... in order to ensure the continued support of the population; and recruitment of the young men and women that are key to future sustainment and success."

A national disgrace.

They could put the same resources into activity centers in the wilds, incorporate veterans the right way, but it never happens.

things get pretty intense when they form or take over gangs and inject miltary tactics and discipline into criminal activity.

washyourhands when you did your year, were you often called upon to beat up your little brother's enemies, this was the main military presence where i grew up.

hah, no, but "my brother's in the army and he'll beat you up" is not colchester-specific.

The reason I hate all english men is because I asked a soldier at the end of my street if I could see his gun when I was seven and he said "fack orf you fenian caant". They did a few other things in ireland apparently but that must be one of the worst.

You get the drip-drip of a figure like Ant Middleton ingratiating himself into morning tv, bit of crossover with the witness the fitness thread too. I despise the pathological tendencies with a lot of this type. No moral barriers in country, despite the rhetoric in the media at home. Put them on a reality tv contest screaming in people’s faces during mock interrogations that border on farce. It normalises their actions. Housewives swooning at pecs. Chief execs getting to the last round. Dicks.
