the olympics just doesn't hold the same cachet for top players as the Grand Slams, looking at the lists of past tournaments. Fernando Gonzalez twice got medals (2004 and 2008), but only reached one quarter final in the Grand Slams in those years...suggests the others weren't trying as hard.

There's some truth in that, but the Olympics is predominant a 3 set tournament - which will favour certain players. You could actually look at it partially the other way, maybe Gonzalez was looking at the Olympics as something he could realistically win and so looked to peak there in those years. Him reaching the final of the least prestigious Grand Slam in 2007 also backs up this idea I think.

I'm not so sure re difference between three/five sets: not as though the top players are winning loads of GS matches in five when they play inferior opposition. They're usually ahead after three sets have been played too.

I agree that Gonzalez upped his game, but i think the main reason is that he knew the others didn't care about it as much as they cared about the Slams. So yep, def did make sense for him to concentrate on the Olympics.

Back to the original point: To think Murray would beat Federer in straight sets in a Slam - would never happen in a million years. It really wouldn't. Let alone 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 (?) - the only person who's ever done that to him in a major is Nadal on clay. It's unthinkable, more unthinkable than Federer simply not being that bothered (which is different from him letting Murray win) when he's on 17 GSs and barely anyone even knows who won the previous Olympic titles without reference to Wikipedia...

it might not even be that tries any less it may be more that he has an innate ability to find another gear when it really matters, dunno if that's 6 and two 3's or not

Well well well....pressure clearly got to him for a while there, but he played that 5th set like a fucking champion and deserves his place in the Grand Slam club.

wow indeed, who'd have thought it? only saw the first set live, but that alone was titanic. WIll be interesting to see if he can now go on and build on this, now his hex in GS finals has been demolished

He will definitely win more Slams. He's won over pretty much all of his doubters, including me. Well, I never doubted his physical ability, but I didn't rate his mental capacity or like him as a person. Now you'd have to argue he's got pretty much the full package.

I. Am. Now. A. Murray. Fan.

There, said it.

Not. Singing. Anymore.

Asked what he thought Fred Perry, Britain's last winner of the men's singles at Wimbledon in 1936, would say to him if he had the chance, Murray replied: "Why are you not wearing my kit?"
