sometimes
they look amazing - but i can't really see the appeal outside that - but they do seem to have something about them that i've noticed that popstars and cgi and computer game characters seem to be worlds that are merging together, its as if from indie rock, with lots of grey men, we've come out into this world where things seem much more cartoony, these guys seem computer game ready like they're already avatars.

what i know from speaking with long time SA music scenesters:

ninja is one of like 15 characters dude has created in his comedy/hiphop career; it's also the first to make him any money and bring exposure.

they work with all the usual producers in the SA hiphop circles, like African Dope guys, etc. but on their albums all production is attributed to a fictional person.

in SA everyone understands the joke: that they claim to represent all of SA, while they are not even real Afrikaans. but out here the jokes are lost in the translation and they are at serious risk of a load of misunderstandings...

they don't do anything for me that "real" african hiphop can not do 10 times better but it's cursorily interesting i suppose. in some ways.

^^^all this is true I think. Their album is good for a few listens though and they make me laugh so I'm all for it really.

my friend said he first came across the word as an adjective, like a mixture between sif (nasty) and kief (cool) ... then it became a clothes thing, afrikaans white trash bling glam. now its like a more generalised reclaiming-Afrikaner-culture thing.

this is all way too confusing. one of his previous incarnations:

http://africasacountry.com/2010/02/19/is-die-antwoord-blackface/ - has this alredy been posted here? An interesting piece, at any rate.

And there was a related argument about whether the tattoos Jones has on his chest and arms are the actual symbols of the (legendary South African prison 'numbers' gangs) 26s, 27s and 28s or not. I can't believe that anyone not insane would dare to do that, but some (south African) people seem convinced...

Edit: links in with what Zhao is saying upthread about all S Africans getting the joke

A friend of mine sent me a link to the 'Enter The Ninja' video the other day. I was sure I'd heard the name of the group from a thread on here ages ago, and here we are. Quite possibly the most terrible thing I've ever heard. Also the woman has one of those haircuts that makes you look like a lobotomy patient, and kinda sings like it too.

Edit: they should hook up with the Juggalos, I reckon they'd go down a storm.

here's a thing. people in the outside world (ie the internet) seem to love them or hate them, whereas in SA the most they get outside of their Cape Town middle-aged hipsterhop clique is mild indifference.

It's all grist
*sighs*

I dunno, it's like you're all criticising The Simpsons for the way they're drawn or something. Come on guys, I'm tired and depressed and I've got shit on my plate. Don't make me defend Die Antwoord on the interwebs.

Tea are you going to bang face?

Oops, just seen this - nah, I've never been to their weekender, might try and remedy this at some point but I'm busy elsewhere this year. Used to quite enjoy their night in London a few years ago, silly as hell and patronized mainly by monstered 18-year-olds but generally good fun all the same.
