It struck me the other day that mephedrone is to ecstasy as 'nu-rave' is to the original acid house/rave culture.

I can't really back this up in any rigorous way, it just seemed to fit at the time. Something to do with how meph seems like a shallower, more nakedly hedonistic version of MDMA - like ecstasy for the MySpace generation, or summat like that.

True enough. I'm sure Zizek / Mark Fisher / SR would find something to say about that. NuDrugs, all the buzz without any of the challenging social or political implications.

Then again MDMA had already become a 'shallower, more nakedly hedonistic' version of itself outside the lovedup late 80s / early 90s utopian PLUR / vaporub contexts, don't you think? The effect of the drug had actually changed due to different expectations, set and setting I guess.

It's still possible to experience those effects but you could end up feeling a bit anachronistic amongst others for whom it is merely a component in a general poly-buzz soup. Although mostly I think that's a fairly healthy approach to these things, done safely of course. And it was always about group experiences so if the group ain't feeling it it's not really working. Those magical parties where everyone is on the same pills and hits that collective plateau where, yeah, you know.

Most of the time anything that's like MDMA but isn't is kind of disappointing. There is something special about that one I think.

True, as far as it goes - but it can still happen to anyone, especially on their first time or while still in the "honeymoon" period. I found it to be so, and I came to it a good decade or more after its supposed heyday. Depends wholly on the context, as you say, and this has more to do with what kind of mates you have and the kind of clubs and parties you like to go too than with what calendar year it is.

Can't really imagine someone having quite the same experience on the 'drone though, can you? However you look at it, there's a lot more to MDMA than just 'fun'.

I don't think you get the same loved up buzz going by the 1 times I've taken da mephs. And that was really the only thing about pills that was worth much IMO. Heavy Empathy.

i didnt mind it the first time i did it, but three/four times down the line it just seems a bit shit. i'd rather not now. the nu-rave mdma comparison is on point.

has anyone done NRG-1?

Oh god, that looks like an MDPV analogue - sorry, don't want to drag a Music thread into pharma geekery, but - that stuff is pretty fucked. Just far, far too strong and with too much strain on the heart for the dubious 'euphoria' you get from it. Useful in tiiiny doses as a coffee alternative if you want to sharpen up and fend off tiredness, but that's about it.

Though I've not tried this 'NRG' stuff itself.

Took this shit once or twice, both times palmed off by someone saying it was ‘weak MD’ (yes yes yes, I should have known)

Can assure you though, NYD was spent cleaning sick out of my ex’s bed, hallway and toilet floor.

Never ever again.
