it blows my mind that they caught this guy so quickly, just amazing. feels like an episode of "24"! if bush were in office, the neo-cons would be loudly going on about how it's proof that he's tough on terrorism, etc. but since it's obama...

i don't want to sound overly cynical, as preparedness is good (certainly in major world cities like NYC) but Peter raises a good point.

presumably anti-terror money is one area where senatorial pork can come into play? or i am being too cynical here?

i don't know if anti-terror money in the States is devolved to each state capital from one pot and everyone gets what some anti-terror czar in DC says based on federal assessments, or is it the case that local politicians do lobby for this stuff (as they do for bridges and miners' compensation packages and wind farms, or whatever) and a state can get more money purely based on the pitch skills of their representatives?

if anyone knows about this i have always wondered about it so would be very grateful for anyone who knows more on the subject to expand.

Leo btw, how was your better half's extended stay on our side of the pond?! i guess she got to see more of the relatives, huh!

Depends who "they" are, doesn't it? I'm sure white-supremacist miltia types haven't hung up their boots yet just because there are some new guys in town. Wasn't the Oklahoma City bombing the US's worst terrorist attack until 9/11?

Out of interest, have there been any high-priority cases in the states lately involving 'white power' or anti-government people plotting large attacks against civilians (as opposed to targeted assassinations, I mean)? There was a white guy over here who was arrested a few months back for planning bombings to start a 'race war'...somehow the case didn't receive as much attention as the average Islamist plot does. :slanted:

i noticed this from a well-known right-leaning US twitterer earlier today and it really vexed me. maybe a US citizen (of Pakistani heritage, or Pakistani National, says Breitbart, whatever) and a white guy both have fairly pale skin tones, and maybe it was on the night and witnesses were not entirely sober and maybe Andrew Breitbart is a disingenuous cock.

granted, i'm sure the US MSM is as rightly critical of (certainly the wilder shores of Tea Partying) the Tea Party movement as they are of the radical Islamist threat, but i'd imagine if anything there are large swathes of fairly mainstream US opinion that are giving Tea Party types a pass (most of FOX, for one).

sorry to bring up one anecdotal aside, as i'd never heard of this bloke until this morning, but it just annoyed me and it seemed of a piece w what Mr Tea just posted.

i'm not making equivalences or anything, but it's undeniable the frothier elements of the Tea Party are nutjobs who say they stand ready if need be to take up arms against the overweening commie threat from DC. (and i know serious reported assassination threats from US citizens are way up in number against Obama's person than they were in Dubya's time.)

Dan Gardner on Newswipe mentions the case of a white supremacist blowing himself up outside an NFL game in Oklahoma in 2005. He starts talking about it at around 3mins 10secs - .

Like you I also noticed the case of the guy wanting to start a race war didn't really receive any coverage. It was in the list of stories on the right-hand side of the BBC News site, but wasn't given any particular attention. Yet this incident in NYC was on the front page of the BBC site, not just the news page.

I began thinking this time it was a 'white guy', based on earliest reports, and Conn. address.
Looks like Al Q would like to US citizens do the dirty work , from the inside.
Well, this was one sloppy result.
But they pulled him off the plane after the door had closed -that's so close to 'fail'
