New government's Great Repeal Bill can help repair Labour's damage to our liberties

The parties agree to implement a full programme of measures to reverse the substantial erosion of civil liberties under the Labour Government and roll back state intrusion.

This will include:

A Freedom or Great Repeal Bill.

The scrapping of ID card scheme, the National Identity register, the next generation of biometric passports and the Contact Point Database.

Outlawing the finger-printing of children at school without parental permission.

The extension of the scope of the Freedom of Information Act to provide greater transparency.

Adopting the protections of the Scottish model for the DNA database.

The protection of historic freedoms through the defence of trial by jury.

The restoration of rights to non-violent protest.

The review of libel laws to protect freedom of speech.

Safeguards against the misuse of anti-terrorism legislation.

Further regulation of CCTV.

Ending of storage of internet and email records without good reason.

A new mechanism to prevent the proliferation of unnecessary new criminal offences.

well that's good news anyway :)

did they not also promise to repeal (or at least block implementation of) the equalities bill and renounce the human rights act?

the Tories wanted to do that, but I can't imagine it'd have got through the negotiations

as for the rest...

The Lib Dems did a great deal of research on the proliferation of criminal offences under Labour, revealing that 3,500 new offences were created since 1997.

Fuck me, I knew a lot of new criminal legislation had been passed but that's nearly one new crime* every day for 13 years. Hell, I probably committed half a dozen while making a cuppa and having a shower this morning.

*OK, so an 'offence' isn't necessarily a 'crime', but all the same...

yes, he's a scumbag

but that's the great thing about the hung parliament: he can't railroad through any crap he likes because he doesn't have enough supine lackeys sitting on the government benches.
