wot childrens books still haunt your imagination

The Eagle had a piece on a flying shark. Cunt flew through the air to hunt and was kept on a chain. Madness.

The Mekon and Sgt Streetwise couldn’t compete.

As a state of mind occupiable that is desireable unless false
Depends on what you mean by false. Arguably, if the music is able to induce that kind of state, its legitimacy can just be taken at face value.

That said, perhaps the falsity of such a state would consist of whether or not the influencing vibes are in good faith. Is this music activating this state, because the author feels compelled to express themselves? Or because this state renders one more complacent, more idle, more susceptible to manipulation?

Another reason you can use a higher order perspective, to administer your pathic transformations, and better spot such boobie traps or lotus-eating dens.

It does feel like we are technologically closing in on potentially totalitarian neurochemical control tactics. Not inconceivable that your highest highs and lowest lows will eventually be chemically programmable. Part of the reason I advocate integration of pathos into a wider framework, one more cerebral and spiritual in nature. The like buttons and whatnot are already quite effective, and they are crude compared to what could come.

Totally. And a major axiom here is that as the amount of information (that the average person is socially obligated to process) increases exponentially, as the average reality becomes less and less parochial, more and more predicated upon information that is mediated by the media, the more pathological the average person will seem according to previous standards. Certainly the prospects are disquieting, but nonetheless I'm optimistic.

You are pulling from an ever wider cultural pool, and this diversity gradually neutralizes and cross-pollinates into a more or less homogenous fabric. A sort of cultural entropy that leads to a cosmopolitan equilibrium. But that isn't to frame such a transformation as unfavorable, its the sort of step I voted for. Not without reservations, of course.

And this transformation would be hastened by the market appeal of such diversity, no?

This is simultaneously a book from my childhood that haunts me and also one of my favourites of all time...

The Amar Chitra Katha comic of 'Karna'. Its a story from the Mahabharata.

Weird 70s cover that I guess is a bit Bollywoodised, but it's better than the current one. My original copy had no cover.

This is another where I recently rebought it (quite pricey too, for a very flimsy comic) but in this case cos the original fell apart.

I don't keep many books precious but this one I do keep wrapped in plastic.

The art is amazing, here's a couple panels I love:

That shift from peaceful blue sky to piercing red, to up the drama.

No idea who the artist was, ACK was a DC/Marvel type operation with various artists doing piece work I think, with only the editor, Anamt Pai, being credited. Some of the titles are a bit ropey, I've got loads of them.

Here's another astounding panel: Beeshma on his bed of arrows. It gets a full page. I love the expressionism of the arrows

Yeah I know but hauntology was awful and best forgotten.

i accept your position here @luka but on a thread entitled "wot childrens books still haunt your imagination" it's appropriate to mention it 🙈🙉🙊

i don't want to get into defending/supporting hauntology

but i will always be a big fan of julian house's music and his pictures

i'll bring you along the next time i see them

Thanks @Matthew glad you liked it. At various points in my life I've tried to remake the karna story, as a film, photo book, comic etc but recently have developed other obsessions. This thread brought it back

It's what I was getting at in the anxiety thread. We are already at a point in which the world can only operate by drugging a huge proportion of its population. They can't endure their lives in an un-drugged state. The situation is unbearable. So you've already untethered affect from cause.
