Shure N44G's are the ones for me. None of that noncy concord stuff. Stick like glue with very low tracking, very deep bass, nice and clear hi's.

On the subject, is there anything to think about in buying headshells? I've got an old technics belt-drive deck with no headshell, and am wondering whether I can just get any head with the right fitting, or whether I have to worry about compatibility with cartridges?

Any headshell with the right fitting will work, unless you're using a really exotic cartdige...

If you are using a flash cartridge, it might be worth tracking down something like an Audio Technica MG-10. Made of magnesium!

Question for y'alls...

I got my decks (Technics 1200s) second hand. One came with a Technics headshell and Stanton cartridge and needle, the other with an Ortofon cartridge and needle. I decided to upgrade the Stanton to an Ortofon cos the Stanton doesn't sound quite as good and skips more. When I took the Stanton out and screwed the new Orotfon cartridge in it only plays back one channel, both through my stereo and headphones. The old Ortofon cart only plays one channel on this deck as well, they both work fine on the other deck

In conclusion, one of my decks only plays one channel through Ortofon cartridges. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? I'm going to take it back to the shop tomorrow and ask there, just thought I'd check here first

I took it back into the shop and was told that with Ortofon cartridges you just need to keep screwing them in and unscrewing them over and over again until they fit. So after screwing them in for ages (ooh err etc) I got it to work. Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone else buys Ortofon. I can recommend the cartridges by the way, not stupidly expensive but a step up from your basic entry level ones

I also use Shure Whitelabel.

Reasons? Good sound (important), light on the records (becomes increasingly important as time goes by), reasonably priced replacement styli (no use buying a super expensive stylus if you can't afford to change it when necessary).

Negative aspects: kind of ugly. Certain channel imbalance.

I bought mine on ebay, which I very much recommend.
