Almost every night I get the ache of emergence into reality after dream life, it only lasts about 30 seconds before the memory evaporates but the feeling of loss is really strong. It's not things or people I miss but a certain dream perspective and mindset that feels like it's outside of time, past and future at once, really beautiful and difficult to articulate.

I have one other reoccurring dream, and it almost always comes when I first go to sleep. I'm sharing a rather crappy apartment with one or more people and bummed about being in that situation. the apartments are different each time but all are crowded with stuff, not very comfortable or attractive. and often there is a room off at the end where I think there's another person living (in addition to the roommates I know about) but we never see him, and wonder whether we can use that room or if it's actually off limits.

it's probably another anxiety dream related to living in a comfortable environment. I hated having roommate in college and when I first got out of college, was so grateful when I got my own place. guess there's the repressed fear of someday having to return to that situation. being married is sharing space but (obviously) different.

I also often have dreams where I fly.

Ive been hired as some kind of consultant for the American ambassador to Ireland. He's a Trumpian, running for some office, it's unclear where, mabe Louisiana. I hire a band and a creative team, and we create a campaign aimed to capitalise on a controversy over Paul Morphy's (fictional) disrupted last game. This game is unpublished and the results cannot be legally discussed due to multiple civil suits, as apparently whoever can claim to have won the game could also lay retroactive claim to being world chess champion, and some feminist group is now claiming that a previously unknown woman player, did in fact win the game. We decide on a campaign song and presentation around the issue, it bombs in a shambolic apprentice style scenario in London which somehow involves Boris Johnson. However, the song itself, ostensibly about the glory of Morphy and the Southern tradition, also contains some surreptitious recounting of the moves, that stops short of breaching the legal embargo via some kind nanoscopic temporal loop, an aural Xeno's paradox that never quite gives the whole game away. The end product confounds critics and is acclaimed by both left and right as a subversive traditional postmodern melange, and amidst the confusion the ambassador wins the election.

I know what you mean,
but that's much better than waking up with a sense of unease, of vague trauma or dread from some 1/2 remembered or not at all remembered nightmare,
sometimes you start the day with that weird mood, or sometimes the awareness that something was in your dreaming mind surprises you during the morning - some person or thing chimes with the earlier dream-state, perhaps the apprehension of that moment was why you had the bad dream

Let's Talk About Ceps
Last night, Gillian Anderson asked me if I wanted to run off with her to the Costa del Sol (?!) and my response was "But what about my baby and my partner and my job?"

When I woke up it felt like I'd passed some kind of self-imposed test.

Not really, tell us more...

One thing I’ve started to notice is that my dreams circulate around certain themes and environments that I dealt with in my late teens. My subconscious is still processing that shit.

Who’s dreaming? Who’s sending the message? Who’s receiving it? What the fuck is happening please

anyone had "characters" reoccur across different dreams? like not real people, dream entities.

i don't remember anything like that, but i had dream situations that were "replayed" in real life well after the dream -- sometimes including dream characters who turned out to be regular people i didn't know at the time they appeared in my dream

Characters? Not sure. Aside from family members and distant classmates, there is the occasional mystery figure - someone warmly familiar yet unplaceable.

shiels, are the lucid dreams a natural occurrence, or do you put in any kind of premeditation or ritual work?

Also, anyone have any death dreams? My only recorded one goes as follows:

In an unfamiliar-yet-familiar house, in the midst of some manner of gathering. People, familiar even in waking life, moving about, indoors and out, not seeming to heed the vicious weather. Palm trees (I'm from the San Fernando valley in Los Angeles) bending nearly sideways in the wind. I'm standing at the door, inside, watching the foot-traffic across the front yard. Two my left is the door, open, and to my front and right are full-wall windows, framed in such a manner to grant a vista across the valley, seeing as we are on a hill - a surreally picturesque image. I hear a sharp, ominous crack from up in the clouds - and the rest takes place in a manner of seconds: I look through the upper left window, into the thunderhead, expecting to see a white flash (I suppose the sequencing didn't dawn on me), but saw an orange one, followed by a flaming mass hurdling downward, which I followed across the window as it connected with the horizon, perfectly centered in the vista-frame. A bloom, followed by a rapid radial flow of scathing energy, and my last thought was frightful: "What if this isn't the end?"

I woke up, feeling as if my heart was caught in a clenched fist.

Yes just spontaneously, and only a handful of times in my life. Usually something impossible is happening and I get the aha feeling, then i'll have a certain amount of 'free will' within the environment i'm in until the sequence collapses... they usually involve some flying, choosing who to meet, sometimes music and fighting and sex (again, teenage boy)

There's also the sleep paralysis lucid dreams after a heavy weekend where I'll be going about my normal boring day in all its perfect boring detail and then for some reason realise i'm dreaming and wake up short of breath and a bit shocked, it's a lot more terrifying than it sounds because you start to doubt what's real for a short while.

As before, don't want to make this about psychedelics BUT

Finished Pollan's book today and it closes with a lengthy investigation of what exactly happens to the brain when you're on shrooms/acid. What happens is the default mode network (a.k.a. the ego) loses control of your brain, which means that all sorts of connections between different areas of your brain (including memories, emotions) can be made that usually can't be made because the DFM doesn't let it happen (for the good reason of making your brain work efficiently so you don't get distracted/go mad and die). With a high enough dose your default mode is essentially toppled and you lose your sense of ego/separateness from experience.

And something very similar may be happening during dreams.

Massive write up on this here, not read it but presumably covers some of the same ground:

yeah there seems to be some similarity between hypnagogia and tripping... liminal, waking-dreams where we seem to have access to subconscious material in a conscious state.

all powered by a slice of leftover pizza, a nub of goat cheese and a cheese string
