im on deadwood season 3 atm - its fucking brilliant. certainly better than breaking bad, maybe not quite as good as the wire or sopranos, but getting there. just saw the fight scene between dan and turner - anyone watched. very grim but very well done.

I have. It's alright. The special effects are pretty bad, some of the acting's a bit wooden and I found the humour a bit smug and 'clever' but it's pretty entertaining and I liked the relationship between Sheen and Tennant's characters.

Yeah, that fight scene's rough. The fight between Al and Bullock that opens S2's good too...

"Welcome to fuckin' Deadwood!"

I'm still on episode six of that one. It does pick up a bit after the first episode though -- love this from the second.

the bullock/al one is good but no one dies, whereas the dan/turner one is like 'the long slow fight' and then it gets so grizzly. you cant watch it. and the aftermath as well. very good. definitely elevated the whole thing for me.

i would like to maybe read the source novel - i think it would be quite good

i think its jude law. i can't deal with him for some reason. partly how he looks, partly his voice. he seems to symbolise everything thats wrong with the world. a vision of britishness that i wish did not exist. i don't think ive ever enjoyed a film hes been in, i cant even think of any off the top of my head

I'd agree. It was just alright. I liked the book when it came out when I was a kid (or teen I dunno) and I've read it a few times. For me I think it was one of those things where I had a view of it in my mind and putting it onscreen was never gonna match that. I mean Tennant and Sheen were both fine... I can't criticise any of it particularly in fact, just overall it felt a little flat, it didn't pop like the book did (in my memory at least it was very successful in being both funny and having a kind of doomy Biblical feel to it from all the Revelations and Omen stuff).
Maybe should give Deadwood a go, lots of people rate it highly. In fact I get the feeling it's one of the few things whose reputation seems to be growing as time goes on.

I've never read him, but that's the impression I had anyway. Likewise Pratchett.
When I was little I won a prize for something (I can't remember what) and it was a book token and I went to Waterstones I think and spent ages deciding what to buy, I saw a Terry Pratchett one (Mort I think) and I was captivated by the cover and description so I bought it and read it and got really obsessed with him for years, read almost all his books until (actually probably long past) I realised they were all the same. I'm unlikely to read or re-read any now but they were important to me growing up. I was certainly sad when he died, seemed like a generally good egg (cue someone now saying that he was a paedophile who liked to poison cats).
Neil Gaiman, I've only read Good Omens (with TP) and American Gods and I enjoyed them both. The telly show of American Gods was good at first I thought but it really fails where it diverges from the book, it feels as though they've padded it out with lots of extraneous material which is really unnecessary and boring. Shame cos it's got Lovejoy in it and Marty McFly's dad and that girl who was in that really cool Australian film about women who were paid to be drugged and raped by senile old perverts.

Pratchett and Gaiman seem to have that same thing going on as Douglas Adams and Vonnegut at their worst. That whimsical, clever-for-the-sake-of-clever humour.

I never thought that. I mean, Pratchett is clearly very much influenced by Adams but I found both of them very funny from the off, I never thought of it as insincere or self-satisfied (maybe later on by book 20 or whatever). I mean I can't really defend these things cos I probably wouldn't want to read them now but they have their place. I mean certainly when HHGTTG was on telly when I was a kid (80s maybe?) it just seemed totally radical and new, in terms of concept and the way the programme was made with silly little computer graphics etc - really had a strong effect on me and I went and read all the books immediately.
Vonnegut can be a bit preachy at times - but I don't really see any link between his stuff and Adams/Pratchett really. I've never seen any similarities in their writing or humour at all.
Gaiman I don't really know. I thought his main thing was comics. I have always meant to read Sandman but (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) it's not available all compiled in one thing and, basically, I don't want to buy loads of graphic novels to read the story.

i've never read either of them (except a little of sandman, which i thought was awful) and on the strength of these last few posts from people, they are to remain cancelled for me.

Maybe HHGTTG was diluted somewhat by becoming such a massive cash cow; the books, the radio adaptation, the tv series, the film, another film and so on. Re-writing the story a little each time so that what actually happened became kinda fuzzy... no real canonical HH I guess.
