Cover versions that you prefer to the original

Timebox's version of Beggin' may be better than the original - it's certainly more expensive (although come to think of it everyone knows it's a cover so it's not really relevant).

Maybe not so cool, but I definitely love this more than Jimmy Webb's original:

Also I'll take Husker Du's Eight Miles High.

Compared to the original, which is really dorky and about the time Pixies were crapping out into Frank Black Cheese, there's a weird sort of over-emotionalism to the sort of tantrum guitars.

Surf-Punk-Metal solos in a Joy Division song is quite frankly, horrifically brilliant.

the greatest joy division cover of all time by about a million orders of magnitude. probably one of the greatest covers of all time period.

not better than the original (how could it be?) but still amazing

waaaay better than kiss. the mats did a bunch of good covers - 20th century boy, another girl another planet, etc

+ a bunch of punk rock + hxc things that may only interest me

not better than the original - possibly the greatest hxc song of all time - but still great. in the early 80s before turbonegro some of the guys were actually in a pretty great hxc band called akutt innleggelse (oh + the original is by negative approach)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tfoDb7ZRla8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

original is by the partisans, equally awesome cover is by famous polish crust band from the 90s
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YTS9zt96yxA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

original is nuggets type 60s garage rock, but this is way better. especially the walking bassline.

no d-beat band can ever be as good as discharge but this cover is from discharge's hair metal phase so it's way better than the original

this one is much funnier if you know the original (that's aimee mann w/the sweet rattail). gang green was great hxc band (that later turned into shitty bar rock but whatevs), they were both from boston so it's basically an in joke. I mean i like both versions. the best thing is probably aimee mann + her asshole stockbroker BF tho.

best iggy pop cover of all time I think. zorra literally means bitch or slut, so me gusta ser una zorra is has a feminist connotation at the same time (like the raincoats covering lola kind of)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QMS5EtXdERk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

paralisis permanente is kind of a cult band from the early post-franco era, the singer died really young in a car crash. I prefer this to bowie.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/aPpX21M9vw8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

not a cover but interesting. the vocal sample is from crucifix, a legendary anarchopunk band from the states. before techno the hartnoll bros were punk kids listening to crass + all that (which makes sense I think)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YdRlvg5DzMc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/91h6qUikXjA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

pretty surprised no one's put this up. not better than marvin but pisses all over CCR for sure
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IQxvo_9DEqY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

+ 2 from living colour who are underrated I think

pretty cool version of pere ubu

+ go to 2:22 on this one to hear a great take on "house music all night long..."

The best example of turd-polishing I know. Annoyingly, this youtube version is a bit glitchy, but no matter. Mixes really well with jungle, too, if you're so inclined. (I'm thinking 'Warhead' by Krust, maybe.) Inexplicably, this went top 10 by dint of being on the b-side of the Manics' cover of "Theme from M.A.S.H." - which it effortlessly trounces.

I shan't link the original; if you're unaware of it then you have led a charmed life. (Not that I'm anti-Bryan Adams per se - Run To You, fuck yes.)

It also featured on the NME's "Ruby Trax", which largely consisted of semi-ironic cover versions (e.g. Tori Amos doing "Ring My Bell", for fuck's sake!). This was also on it, though, which I still love, and punctures the pompousness of the original beautifully (again, you surely know the original here):

Forgive me, I'm drunk and full of meat. I do quite like the original, too, but I adore this.

This live version of the previously-mentioned Husker Du/Byrds classic is quite a thing to behold. The shouting! The moshing! The mud!

My favourite cover. Took me a while to remember it because it's not a proper cover: it's a Frankenstein's monster of two great tunes:

Think there's a similar thread somewhere in the archives.

Dylan is the first that spring to mind as I can't stand his voice,

I prefer both Hendrix's

and XTC's (too long) version of "All Along The Watchtower" (which owes a lot to Devo's interpretation of Stones's "Satisfaction"):
