My Bloody Valentine's version of "Map Ref" by Wire. The original is great but the MBV version is, like, the best thing evar!

I know there are others. I'll think about it.

I could only think of this overnight, same sort of production values as the Dionne Warwick version without being a complete rip off. But when I listened to DW version this morning I realised I was wrong.

Rivet - always thought that it was weird that a band could take a Sonics track and make it heavier and rawer. Their version of It's Not Easy (Rolling Stones) also very good.
How about (very obvious) Flying Lizards version of Money? Loads in that post-punk vein, Slits version of Heard it Through the Grapevine (though maybe not actually better than the original - which was by Martha Reeves I guess so you could in fact say Marvin Gaye's version surpasses the original), Devo's take on Satisfaction etc etc

not sure whether i marginally prefer it, but always had a soft spot for Voivod's amped up version of Astronomy Domine.

More or less a note for note remake but but Badu's voice gives it a darker shade of blue.

Darned cockwombles.
Obviously (though someone will inevitably disagree) Nothing Compares 2 U
Saint Etienne - Only Love can Break Your Heart (tho I love Neil Young too)
Galaxie 500 - Ceremony
Luna - Sweet Child o' Mine

Destroy: (most, some I have a sneaking if guilty affection for) 'ironic' indie covers of gangsta rap songs.
