What we have discovered here is a tension between the notion of individual agency and this notion of outside forces (in this case Russia) manipulating individuals as Iago does to Othello and doing so en masse. I don't think that the word 'legitimacy' is strong enough to resolve this tension.

I recently read a report from some think tank which claimed that younger people are moving away from the individual liberty of the previous generations in favour of a stronger state. I've also read that the UK population in general appears to favour nationalism and a stronger state which I guess is national... socialism?

Sounds ideal. Consider: a party prepared to put the rights of British workers first. A sort of National-Socialist British Workers Party, if you will.

What could go wrong?

Banter. But I think the points I was making were interesting. I will go back to them soon enough.

When did France last have a president who wasn't hated by nearly everyone in the country? Was it Chirac?

it's a real issue, to be fair. if we don't pay to subscribe to a site, it's only right to let them earn some revenue from ads. if ads are blocked, the site's ad buys are less appealing to advertisers, then they get fewer advertisers, then they go out of business.

You can't trust ads though and they don't just want to show you ads. They want to share your data with other sites, they want to store cookies on your machine, they want to see what else you're clicking on and some ads also try to install software. It's a minefield.

If it was literally just images in the sidebar or whatever then I'd maybe have more sympathy, but it isn't. It's insidious and manipulative.

It wouldn't surprise me if the data being collected continues to become more and more robustly informed, as if pieces are being assembled into more and more complex assemblies, such that ever novel techniques will become possible in the effort of mining the psyche.

But this is a sticky issue. The kind of defensive mentality we have could very well be feeding into the trend of monopolization, thus making the need for defense ever more pronounced. A sort of positive feedback loop, if you word it that way.

It's weird to me that advertising is still the main revenue model on the Internet. If we could all be persuaded to buy a little, we could do without advertising. Bandcamp proves it can work but it's hard to get people to pay online. We pay later instead.
