Now read the article. I agree generally, and I get super-annoyed by upper middle class people going on about being 'creative' just cos they have a few technical skills gleaned through paying to get them. Maxine Peake's quote is interesting too.

But: "I have a gorgeous gay mate of working-class origin..." er, why is it of any relevance that he's gay? If you're trying to fight essentialism, then that kind of irrelevant detail doesn't help....

if this notion is true at all, it seems like it might apply more to acting than music. she describes the need to be posh in order to afford acting school, but bands still come out of the basement and shit clubs, right? anyone can make beats in their bedroom on a cheap computer.

Exactly. And beyond that her characterization of the middle-/upper middle- class is completely fucking ridiculous.

In the old days it was the working classes who made sure there was a job for their son in the print or down the mine, but these days that privilege also belongs exclusively to the better off. With the better jobs, natch.

Then all the over-educated, under-talented types currently nabbing these jobs because their parents were in the music/ acting/hacking racket could then go and get one of the "proper" jobs, like doctoring and teaching, that they often advocate that everyone else should be aiming for instead of being obsessed with fame.

Right, because being in the middle-class means being born to entertainment moguls who can make you instantly successful, and failing that, can just as easily secure you a job that takes as much qualifications and training as being a doctor, without requiring you to do anything but say "daddy please." Give me a break. And like anyone does a background check on talented artists to see how wealthy their lineage is. If the problem is that schools are too expensive, she really should've limited it to just that.

but it is largely true though isnt it, that just as the schooling system has made it harder for people not from the usual backgrounds to access the same higher level of education, so the music and film industries have become even more of an old boys network. or is that a specious claim, made by people in the media from middle/upper middle backgrounds with a guilt complex, who prob do the exact same nepotistic thing. it does look a lot like thats the case. (of course, not sure where dizzee, tinchy, n dubz and them fit into this theory - they kinda prove you can be a success even if youre not 'connected' and didnt go to the brit school like everyone else dont they? even if they have done it by getting really shit).

most of the brit school lot are ultra professional but pretty boring/vacuous. waiting to see what katy bs album will be like. from what shes done so far im almost expecting a concept album about a night when she goes clubbing.

That's the first person I thought of when I saw the thread title. She was singing i.e. miming on breakfast TV really struggling to sound like she came from London. I wonder if she talks likes she sings because it sounded all a bit fake. Being from the north may have biased my opinion.
