I think Pusha's solo stuff is mediocre generally. To be honest the big draw with the Clipse for me was always (shock horror!) the Neptunes.

The one big exception is ''Still Wanna'' with Rick Ross. ''You know what fame is? Sittin' with the woman of your dreams and not remembering what her name is'' is the only Pusha line I can remember from the whole ''Fear of God'' (/II). And Rick Ross's verse on it is incredible, definitely the ''AHA!'' Ross verse for me.

i didnt hear fear of god, i just thought that raid song was alright. its jaunty and catchy.
i had a sophisticated way of compliling my list. i trawled through this whole thread and copied evrything, then i looked at my ipod and copied everything on that, then i looked at some blogs and forums to copy anything else i might have forgotten about. its weird cos it maks it a 100% interent list. every single one of these songs i first heard on the interenet. i dont think i have heard a single one of these songs outside of that context. thats odd to me.

That's just the way music is nowadays, isn't it? I mean non pop music, anyway. You aren't going to hear most of this hip hop on mainstream radio. I haven't got Sky/MTV etc. I suppose a lot of the big hits are on there (i.e. Rick Ross).

I've bought hardly any music this year. I've been skint most of the time but I don't know if I'd have bought much even if I had money. Disreputable obviously, but true.

My list is going to be scientifically drawn (nicked) from dissensus, my own blog and blogs written by people who put enough work in to actually listen to a lot of new music.

Thoughts on list so far:

- ''Mask On'' beat is great but Gunplay... I dunno. He's like Ross with a worse voice.
- It's a shame I don't like Lloyd Banks's voice cos he gets great beats.
- I almost love that ''Zombie Nation'' flip. I mean, I might. I'm flipping through the list really.
- Quite like that Casual tune, surprised.
- Somehow hadn't heard ''All Around The World'' by ASAP Rocky before.

really? hes a lot more animated than ross. he is a bit more ambitious in the way he works with a beat. i like him.

Actually I was wrong to describe him like that. I can see what you're talking about - was watching some of his videos today - he's got a very larger than life/cartoonish/charismatic delivery. Voice still sounds a bit weird but... ''Mask On'' is fantastic.

I got through the whole list in the end, then most of Martorialist's. Loads of great tunes in both lists, having to listen to some mixtapes before I commit to a list. Highly ridiculous but actually beneficial (to me).

im waiting to see your lists so i can catch up. i love the juicy j mix tape. the yo gotti one thats recent did nothing for me. he sounds like his permanently trying to sound like hes about to cry. asaps tape is really good if in need of a bit more solid identity, but it would make an amazing ep.

I go back and forth with ASAP. Sometimes I think he's pretty good at crafting a song to go with a beat (the beats are usually great), sometimes I think he's just a weak rapper, saying nothing and usually in somebody else's voice.

Finally listened to ''Blackland Radio 66.6'' last night (well, most of it - forgot to put a few tracks on my mp3 player)- I feel similarly ambiguously towards Spaceghostpurrp. The beats are sometimes great but the rapping is so disposable and dull. Also I see what Martorialist means when he compares SGP to Edan - I'm just not that familiar with the 3-6 Mafia records he's blatantly ripping off. The first four/five tracks on ''Blackland Radio'' are great (if you turn your brain off, of course) and then it gets boring or worse, I can't tell.

It's obviously also an interesting album, from a journo/blogger perspective, because of its deliberate conjuring of a lo-fi, retro, tape-hiss sound. E.G. ''Possessed'' (Track 1) could easily be quite banging, but he's made it sound quite dim and bass-less. I mean, despite all the ''take this dick bitch and stop crying like a little ho'' stuff its quite a nerdy project, isn't it? It's curatorial, in a sense. Again, I think Martorialist (and So Many Shrimp) are right in saying that its all been done before, better (with better rappers), so it feels a little pointless...

Saying all this, I like: ''Get Ya Head Bust'', ''Suck A Dick For 2011'', ''Like A Strippah'', ''Grind On Me'' and ''Osiris Of East Pyramids'' and ''My Hood'' (which I think features a much better - although not THAT much better - rapper than SGP, ''Lil Ugly Mane''). As derivative and retrograde as his sound is, you can't deny that he executes the impersonation very well.

Listening for today/this week includes: Gucci Mane - Writing On The Wall 2, Gunplay - Inglorious Bastards, Juicy J - RBB2 and maybe that new one... and other things I suppose.

I'm wondering if I've liked anything this year as much as ''Hard In Da Paint'' and ''Freeze Me''? Probably some Curren$y bits. He's probably been my favourite rapper this year, I thought ''Covert Coup'' was great and ''Weekend At Bernie's'' too, actually. Never gave ''Verde Terrace'' or the Jet Life mixtapes much time, though. Didn't hear Fiend's mixtape, either, actually.

this juicy j mixtape might be the best hip hop mix cd/album ive heard all year. virtually every beat is amazing. and juicy has a lot of surprisingly memorable one liners. who has done a better tape this year?

^ Do you mean the new one or Rubba Band Biz 2? I still haven't heard the new one. Rubba Band Biz 2 is firing, though, maybe the closest thing this year has to ''Flockaveli''?

I suppose this is probably reflective of my laziness/the sporadic fitfulness of my listening habits, but I can't really think of many tapes I've listened to more than twice this year. Unless we count ''XXX'' and ''Covert Coup'' (two definite front runners in 2011 for me, LP wise), both of which seem more like albums/EPs to me than mixtapes.

Gucci's ''Writing On The Wall 2'' has been well-received. I've not listened to it enough yet (I am rectifying that this week) but from the few listens I've had it does seem pretty great - Drumma Boy / Fat Boi / Southside / Shawty Redd / Lex Luger production + slightly revitalised Gucci, can't go wrong, really, can it? I've been catching up a little with Gooch's back cat this year, though, and I now know exactly how much better he was as a rapper on ''Gangsta Grillz: The Movie'' / ''Chicken Talk'' and ''Burrprint 3D''. ''Ferrari Boyz'' had some definite highlights but did feel a bit boring/limp to me somehow.

Flocka's mixtapes were quite good - cherry pick your favourites from ''Salute Me Or Shoot Me 3'', ''Duflocka Rant'' and ''Lebron Flocka James 2'', I suppose. Most mixtapes seem to me to end up as sources for playlists rather than as pieces you listen to front to back repeatedly (i.e. a 28 TRACK Juicy J tape).

Alley Boy's ''Purgatory'' was well worth checking out (''Definition of Fuck Shit 2'' was fairly good, too), as was Trouble's ''Dec 17th'' and ''Green Light''. I've also heard good things about mixtapes by Future, Gunplay and Starlito but I've yet to get around to giving any of these a proper go.

I wouldn't be surprised if Juicy J's tape was the best, tbh.

yeah, the new one.

though this -
Drumma Boy / Fat Boi / Southside / Shawty Redd / Lex Luger production + slightly revitalised Gucci,
has to be good.
wackas album (not heard any mix cds) is one of my favourite albums too, but i think that was last year (didnt get released here til 2011 though so it still counts).

OH! And - I need to listen to the Big K.R.I.T. album/tape ''Returnof4eva''. Cos he's done some really great beats for other people (Alley Boy/Freddie Gibbs, Jackie Chain) this year.

Had a listen to Writing On The Wall 2 today. If you're a Gucci fan, you should get it if you haven't already got it. I like most of the non Lex Luger tracks a lot (and I like ''Tragedy'' a lot too). He works so well with more colourful, quirky production, I wonder if that's what was missing from Ferrari Boyz. I haven't listened to Ferrari Boyz in a while but it seemed at the time like more of a Flocka tape with Gucci put in the mix (the fact that a lot of tracks from it appeared first on Duflocka Rant would bear this out), the beats (Southside mainly) were stripped back and steely, and Waka completely outshined Gucci on it.

Writing On The Wall 2 is much closer to what seems to be the ideal Gucci production aesthetic - bright, slightly twisted synths, bouncy rhythms... a sense of fun to go with the aggression. And Gucci gives a better performance on these beats I think, less sluggish, more of that simple but intricate flowing and memorable little lines and hooks akin to on older tapes.
