What's the comeback for something like this i wonder, has any unknown producer had some of his work lifted by a bigger artist and then gone on to create something successful afterwards?

I am struggling to think of any examples, A Guy Called Gerald supposedly having his work uncredited on 'Pacific State' is not quite the same, but the closest i can think of off the top of my head.

well all of reark's other tunes on his soundcloud are complete fucking pony so I don't think there's any danger of that happening

It's basically the same thing as the Hindzy D Capsule saga really isn't it, if you ignore the fact that Zomby's been massive for ages.

I dunno though, this has probably done more for Zomby's public awareness than it has for Reark's. His next thing is going to get slightly more attention as a result of this, controversy is a good publicity angle really.

don't buy that. big labels will think twice before releasing something of his now. controversy is good, ending up with a lawsuit on your hands is bad.

Hmm, fair point. There is the aspect that it's kept his name present in press between releases etc but yeah, I didn't think about the legal aspects or whatever.

Timbaland completely stole a piece of Commodore 64 music by a Finnish unknown for a track on a Nelly Furtado album, and freely admits to it, too. The poor Finnish dude hadn't the funds to pursue it legally. When interviewed about it, Timbo gave this eye-poppingly cuntish quote:

Fat-necked former beat wizard Timbabland said:
"It makes me laugh. The part I don't understand, the dude is trying to act like I went to his house and took it from his computer. I don't know him from a can of paint. I'm 15 years deep. That's how you attack a king? You attack moi? Come on, man. You got to come correct. You the laughing stock. People are like, 'You can't be serious."

You can read more about it here.

To answer your question, Tomfun (and Mr. Grapefruit Drink?), no - the unknown Finnish guy didn't have any success. Boo.

that was still him stealing ideas, rather than just taking the existing track and using it

Not sure playing an Arpeggio on a 8Bit qualifies as stealing someones idea, they'd been used in the games industry years before this blow up and arpeggio's have been dated back to the Greeks.

Stole or sampled depending on your viewpoint I guess. I'd prefer if anyone could sample anything without worrying about copyright laws. I accept thats a radical view on the issue though and that it must be extremely annoying if you make no money from music and someone like Timbaland samples or interpolates your track and makes millions.

From my viewpoint, this video is a good intro to Timbaland's interpolation/sampling skills rather than an expose of how he rips people off:

I think he's referring to an incident where Crystal Castles stole some 8bit music and put shouting over it and called it their own track.

so yeah proving your point really

Edit: I think that's slightly unfair, they chopped up and resampled all the drums and ting from an 8bit tune I think

That Timbaland quote is cuntish enough as it is, but his use of "moi" really takes it to the next level.

Innit.

I wonder if Tim has ever seen Fawlty Towers. "Pretentious, moi?"

(He probably hasn't.)

We'll know he has if he ever writes and stars in a Torquay-based sitcom about a permanently exasperated hotel manager.
