Boomkat and phonica have their own labels. low company does a great job of reissuing cool records/cassettes that very few people ever heard of, the range is much broader than the type of stuff that was on BEB. I've discovered good things from them, might as well do the label thing as well as retail.

Fair point, although I'd say the label side of boomkat is pretty small in comparison to all the other stuff they sell. No idea about phonica. Like you, I'm signed up to low company and use their newsletter to discover stuff.

I mean that you follow these shops now, rather than specific labels, cos there's so many labels. But I do follow labels as well.

I keep an eye on them for headlines as there aren't that many places to find out about stories like the above, but I'm not a fan. I think third's right about the whole 'fake woke' thing and how cynical they are. I don't like FACT or any of the other sites either.

Yeah I don't like the tone of RA and FACT either, but they're the only way to keep up. I did like tinymixtapes quite a lot, but its now just unreadable. Dip into Quietus a bit as well. Gotta be a challenge for all these outlets, covering so much ground with no money.

yeah, we're in agreement. Boomkat (modern love) and phonica in-house labels are often small run, limited edition. they aren't looking to compete with labels, more one-off specialty releases. I hate using the term curate, but low company is good because they do a great job of curation when it comes to their stock, and that builds trust in their judgement. same used to be the case with temple records and other music in nyc and Aquarius in San Francisco.

some smaller labels do a good job of selecting artists and releases to the point where you feel you can trust them too, but that gets difficult to maintain when a label gets bigger. there was a time when most everything on warp was good, or at least worth investigating. they still release some good stuff, but not buy-on-sight.

I've wondered how the shops are doing what with so many people having their own Bandcamp page. I prefer to buy from BC as the money goes direct to the artist, plus I can always get WAVs.

I love Bandcamp and probably buy something off there every week. I guess it's the value of a store's curation skills. Boomkat is too big, they do take in most electronic stuff, I'm thinking of stores like low or rush hour. individual labels and artists will rep only their own stuff.

Reminds me of both my own band and shadow ring. I think it sounds a bit like your Greenwich song as well
