Name this tune for me...

Do you mean this?

It's not but that's a good version isn't it? Seems too similar to the original at first but then goes off on one a bit. I don't know this guy, gonna check his other stuff, he could have done the track I guess.

Jackmaster did a good Lory D mix that is worth checking out.

There is a lot of good music in this thread i am gonna have to check out.

As a side note, i actually had Zombie Zombie play my night when they had that 12" out (the one at the start of this thread) and they sound a lot better live than they do on record.

Etienne Jaumet actually asked me to mix into them and then play music he could jam over, for the progression into my proper dj set afterwards. So i ended up chopping up a bunch of electronic post punk songs with breaks in them and beat tracks that i felt sounded rough enough to compliment what they had just done. It was pretty special.

Another nice tune but still not it I'm afraid.
But all educated guesses much appreciated - picking up a lot of good tunes in this thread even if I'm not going to get the right one.
Thanks all in fact.
I enjoyed listening to the varied suggestions so I thought I'd try and keep the thread (hope) alive. I didn't have much faith in picking the right one as there's a lot that could fit your description.

Most of what I posted was from the 80s and I just re-read that you said you think it's a recent release. Ah well. "John Carpenter style synths" seems to be in the description of every third dance record released in the last few years.

Can you give any more information? BPM? What kind of drums are they, 4/4, disco funk, electro? Are they real drums or synthesized? Does it have a bassline what's it like.. funky like a disco record, straight like John Carpenter?

Yeah, I reckon it's a current band but it seemed churlish to point that out after you made so many suggestions...
Anyway, these are good questions - although I would have probably been able to answer them better straight after hearing it. I'll start with the drums as they were the defining thing for me, straight ahead, kinda motoriik, no funk, no swing, nothing like that. I'm remembering it as maybe 130 or so maybe a bit more but that could be total bollocks, also it could be pitched way up or down. But fast house tempo I think. I don't remember a bassline at all, just kinda arpeggiated, cold sounding synths on top of the drums. These keep dropping in and out, I'd say that a lot of the drama in the tune comes from that. It bangs with the riff, the riff stops, you think it's finished, it kicks in again - repeat to fade.
Oh yeah, and from hazy, drunken memory, I'd say synthesized drums but... once again... my memory isn't what it used to be.
Thanks for keeping the thread alive.
Also Tomfun - good story, we tried to book them to play once but they kept saying speak to the manager and he kept not replying in time. Probably for the best, there wold have been an embarrassing car crash if he'd asked me to mix something in to what they were playing....

I'm on a computer with no sound working at the moment but I will check when I can. Thank you... keep 'em coming.

could it be something really obvious like bernard fevre? channeling l'esprit de jean charpentier.. stranger things have happened.

I think it's too heavy for Bernard Fevre. Also, this guy is too knowledgeable about music to keep something secret if it was easy to find out... unless he's double-bluffing of course....

It's good but it's not quite right - gonna check through her youtube stuff though and see if there are any without vocals, the backing is very much along the right lines (but slower).

And it's definitely not Zombie Zombie related.?

Daroc? NOTe FounD? Maehtelvin? Power Glove? (I think they're Frenchies), Kavinsky?

The French love that 80s synth sound.

I can't say that's it definitely not ZZ related but I don't see why he would keep that secret. He's a very serious collector and if he said it's obscure it almost certainly is. I've checked Power Glove before and they're a bit more silly, a bit more self-conscious and video game influenced. Think Kavinsky is also more Jan Hammer than John Carpenter and the band I'm on about is more definitely more Carpenter. I don't know the other two though so I'll check 'em out.
They're likely to be a small band cos he said he wanted to bring them over here - that also suggests to me that they haven't played here before.

"this had better be fucking good"
Yeah, you're right. I'm worried that someone will turn it up and it won't sound as good as I remembered.... if that happens I'll just pretend it's not it. We've had a lot of fun looking for it anyway haven't we? Haven't we?

"How'd you find out its French?"
I played a record and said to him "It sounds a bit like that secret record" and he said "Yeah, it does a bit - and it's French like that one". I duly noted this down...

Still no..... but on the bright side we've covered almost every electronic record ever made so we should have it soon.
