Name this tune for me...

I'm checking Maethelvin now - to me they sound like driving down a beautiful but desolate LA freeway in a tired looking open top sports car as the sun comes up, with two dead-eyed models in the back seat and a nose-bleed from the cocaine staining my white suit with the sleeves rolled back. The song I'm after sounds more like a speed-freak cyborg driving through a post-apocalyptic city at night, constantly on the look-out from an attack by the bad robots. In other words, dark paranoia as opposed to glamorous ennui. Escape from New York rather than Less Than Zero or To Live and Die in La.
Does that distinction make any sense?

Thanks for sharing the secret... it's the right sound palette but the one I'm after is much more frantic. That's why I put the bit about speed-freaks in the above description.
Imagine the sounds from the above song with this kind of beat and arpeggios on top

You're out of control in this thread Proteus - and I'm grateful. That last one is great.
I should probably list some stuff although I'll know that it isn't the right thing...

Nice. Sounds kinda like Tangerine Dream or Jean Michel-Jarre (Edit: though not later on) though maybe they wouldn't thank me for that later comparison. Some of his stuff is pretty rocking though I guess.
I met this one guy from Turzi at a recording studio thing in Paris, he seemed like a really nice guy. Was over the moon cos he'd just been to the flat of some woman who was selling a lifetime's collection of rare prog and psych and he'd scored a load of it plus several Occora field recordings that were ungoogle-abley rare.

I can't say that's it definitely not ZZ related but I don't see why he would keep that secret. He's a very serious collector and if he said it's obscure it almost certainly is. I've checked Power Glove before and they're a bit more silly, a bit more self-conscious and video game influenced. Think Kavinsky is also more Jan Hammer than John Carpenter and the band I'm on about is more definitely more Carpenter. I don't know the other two though so I'll check 'em out.
They're likely to be a small band cos he said he wanted to bring them over here - that also suggests to me that they haven't played here before.

Yeah, you're right. I'm worried that someone will turn it up and it won't sound as good as I remembered.... if that happens I'll just pretend it's not it. We've had a lot of fun looking for it anyway haven't we? Haven't we?

I played a record and said to him "It sounds a bit like that secret record" and he said "Yeah, it does a bit - and it's French like that one". I duly noted this down...

No way! You can't do this man! Also can't you trick this friend of you by some list? Have someone else ask about the record in some ingenious way so he won't suspect you're behind it? Or is he clever like a police detective?

I won't do that really. Don't think I can trick him though, if he won't tell me he definitely won't tell some random punter.

your friend is a rank sadist, if you ask me! i would seduce his girlfriend, have sex with her in his flat, gain access to his record collection and write down the name of the wretched thing, then i would contact the artist independently and obtain something even more obscure with which to tease the friend! better yet, preempt him, invite the artist to an intimate dj soirée, then play back a recording of it and watch his eyes widen as a crude but stunning rendition of the song coupled with a knowing wink demolishes his pride! you could also praise the beauty of the mole on his girlfriend's thigh, but that would be going too far.

I am good friends with his girlfriend....
Anyway - it's not this either.

(or anything else on that channel as far as I can tell)

heavy heavy monster sound
You could do a whole night called 'Not this one' and have a sample that you played over every track going (deep techno voice) 'Not this one' and then at the the climax of the night your friend could come on with The Holy Record and play it and the crowd could go fucking nuts chanting "THIS ONE THIS ONE THIS ONE". It would be rad as hell.

ok,
lets start at the beginning.

you say its a white label from the last 2 or three years...

is it the only track on that side of the 12' ?

what makes you sure its from the last 2 or 3 years?

is your friend an 'electro' collector or a general eclectic DJ?

do you know if he has ever cut a one off 'everlasting' record?

will he let you touch it? if so run into the bathroom lock the door and get the catalogue number off the record...

Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
Smuggle in a dictaphone to record a sample then use that clever app that listens to musics and tells you what song it is? Might not work for something really obscure though, I guess.

Also, sloane's idea for a club night sounds wicked.

Maybe it would be better if I did the night on my own leaving a gaping hole of unfulfilled expectation at the end. Always leave them wanting more. Or some even.

"lets start at the beginning.

It's a white label yeah, I've heard him play it two or three times, the first time maybe two years ago. I know the band are current cos he said he wants to bring them over. So it could be older than three years but I don't think it is.

"is it the only track on that side of the 12' ?"
I think so yeah, from peering over his shoulder.

"is your friend an 'electro' collector or a general eclectic DJ?"
Definitely the latter - his background is punk, hip-hop, psych and krautrock - think Andy Votel, Gaslamp Killer etc.

"do you know if he has ever cut a one off 'everlasting' record?"
He does that sort of thing all the time. However he told me he has a spare of this that's up for grabs if I can come up with a good swap.

"will he let you touch it? if so run into the bathroom lock the door and get the catalogue number off the record..."
I don't think he will let me touch it.

If I can get a snip I'll put it on here. Although it would kinda seem like cheating a little bit.
