Loved that 1st wave of afrobeats from 10 years ago, Ghana especially, had high hopes for the UK scene but when it finally did arrive I just wasn't interested. Jamaica's still where it's at, where it's always been at really

that comment was partly motivated by the group of young africans thats been shouting hollering laughing blasting out their trite bibblegum music and generally being happy and having a great time non fucking stop for the last two days somewhere near my flat

I just got back from back from a family beach hotel holiday on the costa de la luz where I've been subjected to nonstop high volume latin pop and reggaeton for a week, so count your blessings.

Not one page of the book I took with me read. Not even one.

There's amapiano thoughts in the afrohouse thread but ye every time I think proper amas (not pitched up) boring I hear a thudding, bone shaking bassline that tells me otherwise. It's influence on afrobeats is inarguable at this point as well. Actual South Africans are fucking annoying though.

my feelings about amapiano are that i) i played it in a car full of girls once and they asked if i could turn it off within 5 minutes and ii) that its the perfect music to play cycling around nyc. with regards to the latter, i think its the constant tension of it, those kind of weird brittle beats that don't relent and which don't really go anywhere but which still have some forward momentum. you have to find the stuff that doesn't have a cheesy vocal though, there seems to be a lot of that about.
