212 is good, but not great - Apparently it's Jacques Greene in the video.

girl might be talking shit about some dude but she the one with dick sucking lips. far, far from a bad thing of course.

in fact in the last few years i have nearly completely stopped using "suck" in a negative way.

rye rye. yep. and even beyond her, i feel like there's a new azealia banks every two years or so. not that i don't like over-the-top confrontational female rap. but she's no trina.
where is crowleyhead when you need him?

almost forgot recently saw the lesbian B-more club duo Yo Majesty do a live set at a grime night. not even going to try to disentangle the lyrics gender-politically... is it sexist when they go on about ho this and bitch that?

Being a bisexual female doesn't make you anything more than a typical young girl in 2012 America. That shit's also so unflattering and pandering it's only inspired more ill will towards her health and career from me.

it don't really change what I was saying but whatever. I'll just note that the search for rap's white whale, the gay (male) rapper, continues unabated on a message board near you.

It does change the power dialectic, if she's a lesbian identifying woman calling a man a queer, surely?

It's really sexist for me to call out someone flaunting sexuality when we all know there'd be absolutely no tolerance for that from a male who was even partially 'hip-hop' affiliated?

Don't act like there isn't a misandrious double-standard there. I didn't appreciate that with Nicki (although she later admitted she never meant any of it, and it was a marketing ploy), and I certainly don't appreciate it from this girl.

How are you (Banks) going to call out Kreayshawn for just being a talentless manipulator when you're also toying with homosexuality as a 'trending topic'?

And once again, it is SIGNIFICANTLY EASIER for her to make this seem fashionable because she's female. That's how it works in American culture, women kissing other women is tolerable because it services male fantasies, but such is not the case for any form of homosexual behavior amongst men.

you meant to write "flaunting HOMO sexuality", right?

change the power dialectic

but it's not like 212 is about reclaiming anything or empowering anybody. it's just the same old tired bullshit stereotypes of gay men. being queer don't just give you a free pass. I'm certainly not saying she or anyone else has to make music that empowers gay people. I was just curious how nobody seemed to notice this when a hot girl was saying it.

bro that's exactly what were talking about, those double standards (misandry is not the word you're looking for tho I think). I fully agree that artists pretending to be queer to promote themselves is way fucking lame tho unless you have some secret knowledge you don't know that's what she's doing. this tho

Being a bisexual female doesn't make you anything more than a typical young girl

is total bullshit. I Kissed a Girl boys fantasy ain't anything close to reality. if you think young girls coming out don't still have it rough as hell, especially in Nebraska or Mississippi or wherever, then you're delusional.

Crowleyhead, so far i've understood that the reason(s) you hate her so much and have lots of "ill will toward her health and career" is... wait i have no idea.

because she's "pandering"? (die pandering bitch die!)
because sexism and double standards exist in society?
or because you think she invented, embodies, or promotes these things?

also, no one has answered my question: are lesbian rappers (like Yo Majesty) going on about ho this and bitch that sexist? i'm guessing it is. because they are imitating male chauvinism, seeking access to male power, "strapping it on" if you will in 80s gender speak, and both condoning and perpetuating the power structure. did i get that right?

her musics cool but not the most amazing thing ive heard all year (cunt is obv still novel but not THAT impressive), which is what some of the hype is suggesting. werent yo majesty the first openly lesbian rappers? (never mind all the closeted lesbian rapppers everyone knows are actually gay). its cool someone is openly gay and rapping and getting press for it, but all that stuff seems more interesting than the music right now. and everyone knows hip hop is more ok with lesbians - like most straight men - than gay guys, anyway. or the pretense of being a gay woman, ie kissing other girls, if not a proper card carrying lesbian like azalia.

more importantly though, real rappers dont smile, esp not in their videos.

Yeah, but you're denying her her own experience, and pre-judging her on the dubious distinction of being like 'every other girl in the US', and as such that's reaaaally sexist. And wishing her ill-health because of her sexuality is plain weird.

I know what you're saying and I don't doubt your intentions - I think you're cool - I just think those two sentences were...off. It is significantly easier for girls to do this, and that's cool, surely? If you believe that promotion of the plurality of sexuality - for whatever reason - is cool. I thought it was cool with Bowie and I think it's cool with her, regardless of reason.

I'm not wishing her ill-health to her sexuality, I'm wishing her ill-health because I think she's a liar and a manipulative pop artist who makes music I can't stand to begin with.

All of her shit plays up racial/class expectations, and now she's thrown sexuality via her gender into the mix... It's all just very taunting, and mischievous and I just have no toleration for someone so blatantly shrewd not being called out for being such when everyone else doesn't get that reprieve.

I've only just awoken, so I can't explain myself better. But also, I don't REALLY wish ill upon her, I'm very fucking melodramatic. As I'd assume you guys knew about me by now. But it's not a big deal, we'll just deal with this again when I call Joy Orbison a talentless pool of anemia or some other incident.

212 is a fun song, but im not sure what the diff between banks and all the other dance/hipster rappers who have come and gone the last few years is. i just see her as this years spank rock, amanda blank, whoever. i predict a year of lots of media interest (she was top of the NMEs people to watch in 2012 or something right?) and interesting interviews, then not very much at all.

i didnt see crowley had already made the same points as me before my last post.

baboon2004

Darned cockwombles.
she's only 20 years old - i think the music industry machine will end up manipulating her more than she will manipulate anyone else, sadly.

The music industry runs on hype, so if any singer comes out or does anything else that is considered 'noteworthy', then it's instantly all over the 'net. Most artists' careers are based on being in the public eye to some degree, whether they have talent or not, because if they're not being talked about (and Azealia Banks was getting plenty of attention for her music alone, as well, of course) then they're not likely to survive commercially. Why do any artists talk publicly about something in their life? Well, lots of reasons maybe, but common in all cases is that it transforms them from artist to personality. Doesn't make it cynical, it's a natural thing is you want to sell records. As with Lana Del Rey though, there's massive sexist backlashes when a woman dares to play with their image.
