what's yer top 10 - albums, singles, whatever

Don't know about top tens, but my absolute favourite record at the moment is Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow by the Bill Fay Group. Recorded in fitful sessions between 1978-81, but only now released - and only the third album of original material to be released by Fay in almost 40 years of music making - this is an astonishing record of painfully-earned Olympian calm; the missing AoR link between Gilbert O'Sullivan and Elliott Smith, the missing avant-pop link between David Ackles and Talk Talk. The opening song "Strange Stairway" is in itself sufficient to make me want to pause, or exit, from living for a moment or 14. Phenomenal work by the younger Gary Smith on guitar, and as with Fay's other two albums, liable to go off on askew improvisational tangents at a moment's notice. "Planet Earth Daytime" is like a Wings single hijacked by David Peel and Sonny Sharrock halfway.

In other news, that new Polar Bear record is pretty ace; not quite the Centipede-meets-Tortoise chimera as stated by Morley in his OMM review, but kind of like George Russell getting diverted into Venetian Snares.

I'm also very impressed by Trio With Interludes, the new (and beautifully packaged) CD by Evan Parker, John Coxon, Ashley Wales and Mark Sanders, which with its mixture of snarling improv and dislocating electronica, actuallly conjures up a picture of what the Miles of On The Corner and Get Up With It might have sounded like had he taken Dave Holland's advice and hired Parker in his band.

I dunno, 'dip it low' certainly caught my attention when i first heard it, and is still probably my favorite of the two. though 'whatever you want' is definitely more of a crowd pleaser i guess...

Pickled Eggs - I don't get it. Wherein lies the appeal? Please explain. I tried eating one once, it was like eating a lump of rubber that tasted like sulfur. Is that normal? Then again, I've been pretty disappointed with the overall standard of fish and chips in England.

6) Irob riddim - Ward 21
A typical Ward 21 production full of huge, crunchy percussion, big woozy Arabian flourishes and a fantastic version by Bounty Killer that sounds like a breakcore remix of Lean Back

word up... im so intrigued as to how this version came about... im thinking they lost half the vocals for the track or they were unusable for some reason.. so someone got creative working overtime. it brings to mind enduser more than anything else for me. all those slightly-off-time delays and hiphop drops.

if the version you mean is 'the baddest' then - it's an old vocal by bounty & ward 21 in combination that's been used on a couple of previous ward 21 riddims.

they did a megamix of bounty killer's old jammy's tunes back in 2000/01 called 'psycho med mega bash' on one of their riddims, can't remember the name. similar style but not as good as this remix

for the record, my current top ten -

1. sizzla - spy on me (very new cut on sleng teng)
2. sizzla - live and do right (still!)
3. african black. very trippy.
4. sick pay (used to be a temp)
5. station fm in the mornings
6. walking along the new river and past the stoke newington reservoirs on the way to work; feels like being in the country (until you emerge on seven sisters road!)
7. anthony b - fire pon rome. fuck the pope.
8. all types of crisps
9. tea. a recent re-discovery
10. toma by lil' jon & pitbull
