New Jersey Club

I think you´re otm regarding why NJ club has received less attention than juke btw. still think it could happen but it would probably have to shed most of the really dumb elements (that are the very foundation of most of this music) to gain respect from certain quarters (see also jackin). my fave cuts are the ones where they take some totally obvious chart hit and make something mind-blowingly abstract out of it with as few elements as possible.

its much funkier than juke as well
Is it? For me a lot of juke stuff grabbed me really hard the second I heard it. There are quite a few bits and bobs that people have played to me one way or another; on dissensus or at after parties or anywhere really, and whatever the context it always sounds different from other stuff, but at the same time it's really immediate and fun.

I think I've said a few times that one thing I like a lot in music is that sweet spot where something is weird enough to be interesting but, at the same time, is not some kind of chin-stroking academic exercise or weirdness for its own sake, rather it retains a pop sensibility or at least has some sort of immediacy or even a hook. Something that suggests that whoever made it wants people to listen to it and maybe even enjoy it. And I think juke does that pretty well.

On NYD we were at a sort of party and the DJ started playing some juke stuff, straight away it stood out as way better than what he played before it and after (though almost all of that was pretty shit so that in itself is not a big claim). Sadly he only stuck with that sound for about fifteen minutes or so but to me the vibe was for that period was noticeably better, some people walked in off the street and I got chatting to them - they said that they had been walking past and they heard someone playing teklife so they came in to investigate.

For me, I've checked out a few of the NJC tunes in this thread and they sounded sort of chaotic but not really that unusual or weird - however that chaotic element made it hard for me to fasten on to it, I didn't hear much in the way of funk or fun or hooks. That's why I'm querying what you say about the funkiness - but it could well be I listened to the wrong tracks, a lot of the links were on formats that I couldn't seem to get to work (I broke my phone and I'm using a really old one just now) so my choice was limited.

Thing is I would love to hear something that grabbed me like juke but which is different.... so @Benny B or anyone who knows about this stuff, if you can link me to something on YouTube that is fun and funky (and far-out too in an ideal world but that is not so important) and which will change my mind and open my eyes to this stuff I would be very grateful.

Sorry rich but you're asking me to respond to 10 year old posts and I haven't listened to this music in a long time. I did do 4 half hour mixes during the year I was really into it though and I think they're really good,I recommend you listen to them 😋 (the ones with the SpongeBob pictures)

There's quite a lot of old school breakbeats in many of the tracks so that's what makes it funkier than Juke imo

I do wanna check the mixes but the thing is, if I do it will totally tie up my phone while it's on and I need it for other things just now. That's why I was hoping you could recommend something that specifically met my criteria and which I could just get in a quick blast. Lazy I know.
