Escape from L.A. (1996)

What the fuck was going on there? Peter Fonda as a surfer. Pam Grier in a very iffy role. Hangliders which never touch the ground. A slow-mo basketball challenge. Kurt Russell surfing a tsunami after being shot in the leg. The whole thing was completely ridiculous. The least ridiculous aspect of it was the religious conservative declaring himself president for life and turning LA into a prison. Appalling special effects too. Some of the worst CGI I've ever seen. The more money people throw at Carpenter, the worse his films seem to get.

I just watched a film called The Wretched which was OK. I'm not too up on modern films, or at least, i don't go to the cinema half as much as I'd like, so sometimes I find myself just googling things such as "Best films of 2020" just for tips on things I might have missed and then pulling out a few to check later. One such film I found was a horror which apparently a lot of the critics had rather enjoyed. So, I checked the trailer on youtube and, while a quick glance at that revealed that it was hardly gonna re-invent the wheel, I thought that it looked pretty creepy, and the vast majority of comments underneath were very positive (and what could possibly provide a better and more objective set of reviews than that).

Anyway, watched it and it was fine. I dunno, there were things that I liked about it, I guess the plot was decent enough, the acting was good. In fact, the way the main character interacted with other normal people as not part of the main horror plot was actually rather better than most. But somehow it didn't add up for me, the film wasn't scary and the pacing was a bit weird. And the twist was kinda rubbish.

i saw this danish film called "another round" and i don't know what to think of it. it's about four middle-aged men that live boring lives and experience some sort of mid-life crisis and then decide to maintain a certain level of alcohol in their blood to spice things up. so they start drinking daily and investigate whether it improves their lives and it does seem to. they are all teachers and since they start drinking their students love them. they start feeling like the teenagers they once were. i couldn't stop thinking how miserable it all was. also in certain scenes the students were singing some weird danish folk songs that sounded very nationalistic to me. i wish i hadn't seen this movie. it wasn't funny and it wasn't also dramatic in a good way.

The Untouchables. It's decent, but it's so cheesy and Costner's awful. He's like Nic Cage minus the eccentricity. The film also feels much older than it is. I'm not talking about the setting, I'm talking the musical choices, the tone of the thing. It feels like something from the 60s, not '87. The weird, sweet music that plays whenever Ness is with his wife, who seems to just drift around the house, smiling at all times and telling him how wonderful he is. The bizarre, swashbuckling raid in Canada with them all on horseback. That cheesy final line. The "Odessa Steps" nod with the pram bouncing down the stairs in slow motion's ridiculous too. So over the top.

It's been years since I've seen it, but Waterworld was one of the most tedious things I've ever seen.

Weird that Costner was a superstar in that he wasn't good looking or talented or whatever but Dances, Robin Hood, Bodyguard were all megasmashes as I remember.... a run thankfully broken by Waterworld which I did watch cos some critics claimed that despite the expense and the delays was actually much better than expected. It wasn't.

I've only ever seen bits of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but it was enough to convince me never to watch the whole thing. Russell Crowe's Robin Hood film's supposed to be shite too.

I have seen that, it's kinda joyless really.

i love prince of thieves but i saw it at the cinema when i was 12 and thought it was the best film i had ever seen. honestly didn't think it was possible to make a better film. until i saw cliffhanger with stallone a couple of years later, when i then thought that there was no way on earth anyone could ever make a better film.

and i watched the director's cut of dances with wolves on honeymoon in mexico. we stayed in with takeaway and beers to watch it rather than go out. really enjoyed it. one of those, like avatar, where the director's cut does make a difference. tier 2 film, like m&c.

i might rewatch waterworld, dennis hopper probably good for a laugh?
