Spencer Kinsey, AKA Gemini, was responsible for some of the freakiest beats to come out of the Windy City throughout the '90s, and as a DJ, provided inspiration for Sneak, Derrick Carter and many others. Rumoured to be homeless, possibly with serious mental health problems, his whereabouts are the subject of much internet speculation. But no one, including his old buddy Sneak, has any idea where he's gone.

Gemini is nowhere to be found.

For many years, there have been rumors circulating about what happened to Spencer. He made a well-publicized move to the Bay Area prior to 2000, giving Chicago - or at least some people in the industry back home - a kiss-off with the acrid track "Swimmin' Wit' Sharks". And so far as anyone knows what happened, that's when something went terribly, terribly wrong.

Gemini was back in Chicago not long after, minus his studio equipment, his DJ gear, or any visible means of support. To the few he encountered, he didn't seem himself. He cut almost all ties, even with people who had known him for years. On one occasion when he was recognized, he vowed revenge on a couple of well-known Chicago House Music producers who he claimed had stolen his music from a laptop. At the time, according to someone who talked with him, he was panhandling - staying in an SRO when he had a good day, a shelter when he didn't.

What had gone wrong? Spencer was still giving interviews as late as 2001, but within a year or two, it all ended. No more tracks, no more gigs, and lifelong friends worried that something was seriously wrong. They couldn't do more than worry: most of them have never seen him again.

so sad

kromestar, apparently. no idea if that's true
Yup, truth.

Anyway, going way back, DJ Crystl.

Pretty much had the Hardcore / Jungle scene at his feet circa '93/'94 (his releases on Dee Jay were and still are stunning), but then vanished into the ether to become a personal trainer in the US, or something.

Did pretty well judging by the photo.

Subsequently heard he did a one-off, never to be repeated gig at Herbal a couple of years back. Wish I'd have known at the time.

Kind of related, weird how Wonder went from THAT GUY, to relatively irrelevant, to now having a really dull output of tech house/dubstep stuff.

I'd bought that album a year or so ago, and it was a real let down, but not on his end.

He did a 2 step garage track with a guy I know called DJ Hades who has now changed his name. They were all mates from Edgware. Another one from that group was MC Shyloc from the rap trio The Brotherhood. Mr Spice is still rapping and their DJ, Dexter went onto produce for Five and other pop bands. Trevor Jackson aka the underdog did their main beats, shame he dont make hip hop any more

Same for Hindzy D. How can you go from Target & Shrapnel to the stuff he makes now. Same for DJ Narrows.

Hindzy was never meant to be big I dont think. I liked his stuff but the whole Bionics (who is also missing along with Big Seac/Nocturnal) nicking his tune put him in the spotlight

Great thread this.
Bodysnatch is a big one of these for me. Everybody knows Euphony (and rightly so 'cause it's great):

but he also had another great EP on Big City from around the same time, with -
The Strength (Mental Rapids):
Eyes on the Horizon:
& the fairly crazy Revenge of the Punter:

Never heard anything else by him though and Discogs only lists a handful of things, all from 92-93. So either he (they?, her?) went on to do things under another name (someone like droid or padraig would know this maybe) or yeah they just disappeared.
Pretty sure in the filmed lecture he did that Simon Reynolds lists Bodysnatch as one of the few people that Goldie considered as a serious rival in terms of production skills back in the day. Seems kind of weird now...
