so i am in toronto, so i can finally try nando's... help me out, what should i get? by which i mean, i know they have different flavors of chicken: spicy, lemon, etc... what's the consensus?

also, should i get a sandwich, or just chicken and fries?

i can't see myself doing this more than once, so help me do it right the first time... i want the proper, typical nando's experience...

dont get a sandwich. get chicken with rice/fries or both (you can get two sides), use the sauces (herb, garlic, hot/med/mild, etc). if you get fries, put lots of nandos chilli powder on them. they dont seem to marinate the meat like they used to so just drown your chicken in the sauces.

in toronto, they seem to sell reg fries and peri fries...

any preference on the sauces?

dont have reg fries. you need to have peri peri fries.

which sauce would just depend on what you like. i personally find that nandos dont marinate their meat like they used to anymore so i end up using loads of sauce (to the point where i should probably ask for a bowl) to make it more flavourful but this might not be for everyone.

but i suggest hot peri peri sauce ;)

the chilli powder for the chips is really good though. you can buy it in the supermarkets here... i need to check whats in it, it cant be that complicated.

Medium hot 1/2 chicken, regular fries, corn.

I dont like the add-on sauces.

Bear in mind it'll probably be country-adjusted, the Nandos in South Africa is terrifyingly hot - and I eat vindaloo - so it might be different for Canadian palette too.

If they're doing chicken livers, get them too. They're boss.

I think anywhere thats counting coleslaw as a side dish is making shit coleslaw. For years I thought coleslaw was disguting due to only having this lazy bastardized and lifeless sidedish variety of coleslaw that come in paperpots or with school dinners. I want to experience nandos also though I have not been.

But I mean it's a travesty to offer you chips or coleslaw - coleslaw is pretty much a condiment, it should come as well as a dish, not instead of it.

Nando's is party to my favourite quote from here ever (bar luka's 'eat the peanut') which was Stelfox a long time ago saying that if you don't like Nandos, you're racist. I still think about that.

I think you should write to them Rich. Tell dem!

Coleslaw and cheese on baked potato.Tubbed coleslaw not posh coleslaw. And no raisins, please. Dont do raisins in savoury shit. No no no.

I've never been but now I'm intrigued and kind of want to try next time I'm back in the country (don't recall seeing one in Holland yet).

A friend of mine said he once saw a Nando's employee in a chicken costume, complete with massive tail, handing out promo vouchers or something among diners sitting outside at one of their restaurants, and his tail was knocking people's drinks and food all over the place every time he turned around, like in a Chuckle Bros sketch.

Dont do raisins in savoury shit.

Never a truer word, mate.

did not get to nando's as all the toronto locations are not central... rides fell thru, it rained on a day i was going to bike, etc... according to yelp reviews, it was a blessing in disguise, as both toronto locations have terrible reviews, filled w/ stuff like "i love nando's in the uk, but this is terrible" and "such small portions... where do they get chickens that small", and "my french fry order contained about 10 fries"...

the last one was a real nail in the coffin vis a vis my enthusiasm, as what kind of place is cheap with fries? i mean, you could give me an overloading order of them, it still costs like 7 cents wholesale...

apparently, the Nando's in Washington DC has really good reviews, so i think in may or june (before it gets too hot), i'll do a weekend down there... Air and Space Museum = one of my favorite places on earth...

so finally went to Nando's... in DC...

pretty great... got breast/wing (spicy) with peri peri fries and corn... tried basically every sauce... the hot peri peri sauce was good, as was the garlic and more mellow lemon one... the wild herbs one just tasted really crazy... by the end of the meal, my mouth was burning up... the sauces don't seem hot initially, but by the end, they build up...

i had expected the chicken to taste like portuguese grilled chicken, but it tasted closer to chicken tikka to me...

i wish we had one in NYC, i would go there all the time...
