Beast of Burden
I mean, they didn't win Euro 96, I realise, but they did exceed everybody's dismal expectations, particularly after the Bacchanalian "Dentist Chair" antics running up to the tournament (is the mere, non-technical point I was trying to make).

Well they topped the group with an amazing performance against the Dutch but then they scraped past Spain on penalties and got knocked out by the Germans on penalties just like they always do. But they were the home nation, that's not exactly a tournament to celebrate in my book.

I mean they only actually won two games and one of them was against Scotland! The rest were draws against the Swiss, Spain and Germany. I guess you could argue that they didn't lose any in normal time.

The Dutch had an incredible selection during that tournament and with a similar selection they played some of the best football I've seen during an international tournament in 1998. I'm not trying to downplay the victory over the Dutch but in 1996 the team was heavily divided into two camps: black players from Ajax and the mostly white, other part of the team.

Still have a trauma over this match:

Strange highlights those that concentrate mainly on Ronaldo being fouled... but yeah, I remember the troubles in the Dutch camp. Those were the days when we thought that sort of thing would never happen to the England squad... ho hum.

Bizarre highlights indeed. France-Netherlands would've been an interesting final in '98, pity. And again in 2000, come to think of it, that being the consensus choice for best international tournament of recent times.

Didn't really check that video before putting it here, seems to be made by some Ronaldo lover I guess. This was surreal:

Yeah, one second the ball is being carried harmlessly deep in their own half, an instant later it's in the back of the Argentine net. A great advert for the long-ball game some might say although that would miss the point that you need players with the touch of that non-flying Dutchman to convert a pass like that into an amazing gaol. I don't think Andy Carroll would have turned that into gold somehow... maybe Peter Crouch.

Hope he goes to Swansea. It would keep the buzz around the club going now Rodgers has left, even if he's not half as good a manager as player (being trained in management at Ajax bodes well though)

First goal goes to Poland. Aping South Africa in 2010 isn't it?

See twitter don't have the special hashtags this time which made Spooky's tweets all the better during the world cup

That was good eh? Very unexpected.

How was that unexpected? This is by far the weakest group in the Euro2012 apart from Russia. Greece, Poland and Czech Republic are incredibly weak. I'm a 100% sure Russia and Czech Republic will go thru.
