Great mix Duke Joy from the Box. Particularly liked the interruption mix into pm dawn (what a weird band, i remember seeing them on top of the pops and they looked so strange, i love em tho) from swv.

And that movement 98 tune with the erik satie backing melody, not heard that before.

Was actually just reading an interview with smith and mighty about that tune and how mark stewart nicked it for ‘stranger than love’ which i love

Minor gripe that my favourite tune

didnt make the cut but theres enough gems.

believe it or not Movement 98 is Paul Oakenfold (!) and Rob Davis who is a pop songwriter who did things like "Groovejet" and some of the big Kylie ones.

So is this mix all from tunes you own on vinyl or something? That's impressive.

And didn't know that about movement 98.

I think it's amazing what you can find in the Under £5 section on Discogs. For the Pure Mince radio shows I rely on really cheap dance compilations and the garage/house remixes on CD2 of millenium-era singles, stuff found on ebay and Discogs that's been forgotten and maligned. I don't think of it as "digging" because it's not like this stuff is rare or hard-to-find: it's just cheap and ignored.

That's why this UK Soul stuff fascinates me not just a listener but as a culture - it's not really been given a fair spotlight compared to what else was going on at the time, at least that's how it seems to me who was born in 1988.

I occasionally buy stuff on vinyl or tape, or more lately bandcamp, but generally rip most other stuff from youtube.

Piracy is bad etc but I've used it to sample dialogue for music I've made etc and it's the most reliable and safe I've ever used.

ah, so it's a software program you download onto your computer. I've been using sites like https://www.bigconverter.com/v1/ or https://www.y2mate.com/en74 where you paste the YT URL, it rips/converts the audio to mp3 and then you download that file. will check this one out, thanks.

and yeah, I only rip YT or Soundcloud audio if I can't find/buy the digital file on Bandcamp, iTunes, amazon, Beatport, etc.

i use various online ones but they are unreliable like you say. but there's always one that seems to work.
