Film - breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

I guess I wasn't paying attention then. But after you posted the trailer and then I saw the poster and then I went on twitter and it was everywhere and so on.... will it be in mainstream cinemas I wonder? The nearest one to me is a multiscreen type thing in one of the huge shopping malls they have here; a horrible box completely lacking in character inside a larger, similarly character-free box, which is fine of course for a random blockbuster that you stumble into to escape from shopping, but the choice is very limited... and also maybe some films are actually best enjoyed in appropriate places, of course it shouldn't matter once the film is on but if I'm honest I do miss the slightly more individual looking cinemas I tended to visit in London or Oxford etc

Does look kinda interesting, cronenburg but with a lofi English feeling. Ben Wheatley vibes. Never heard of this filmmaker, or any of the actors.

That doesn't surprise me, cos this is a film made by a friend of a friend who is travelling to Lisbon in a couple of weeks. He was trying to get a gig here and someone gave him my name, I passed him on to a bar where and now he is gonna play on a Thurs when we are there.

As a result of this we were chatting online and he mentioned that he is also a filmmaker, this 40 min short is his latest and it's being shown at some US festivals right now. He's trying to organise a showing while in Lisbon and hopefully I will get a chance to see it one way or another. We chatted about films for like three hours last night, he seems quite an interesting guy.

He says his favourite film is this - which I've not heard of - apparently it's a big influence on his own work.

This headline is slightly deceptive and disappointing

But it reflects something I have said several times lately... that many films feel frustratingly simplistic and shallow when you set them next to TV series that are thirty times the length. Now I think that we have also pointed out the flaws in long form telly - pointless filler episodes, desperate cliffhangers to get another series, and simply the fact that what was once new has inevitably become formulaic - but to me, the fact does remain, that when they are good and spend the right amount of time doing important things well, they simply can spend more time and bring more depth to certain things with the result that films that are 75 minutes long and which make a cursory attempt to do the same thing suffer badly in comparison. I'm not demanding that all films suddenly jump to being six hours long... but I wouldn't mind seeing an increase in the average length of films, with directors brave enough to take the time that needs to be taken and studios that trust people to go and watch things that are three hours long.

What I would like to see is cinemas adapting themselves to accommodate these coming films, the obvious thing is magic robots or something that give you food and drinks at the touch at the button as you stretch out for hours on end in your space age comfort pod. Surely cinemas would love the money that that could potentially raise. Perhaps every cinema has at least one screen where all the seats are like first class in an aeroplane, something like in the picture below. Probably a different colour scheme though.

James Cameron's idea of having series on telly and then an abridged version in the cinemas is fucking shit though. I hate seeing bowdlerised films, I hate the idea of reading an abridged book. No-one should ever be satisfied with an inferior incomplete version of something that was created purely due to non-artistic reasons. Fuck that.

thats not the idea though is it? the idea is that the same story can be told in two different ways, which seems sound.

Yeah... that's the idea. Was it Monte Hellman who said that the edited down version of Seven Samurai that was made for the US market felt like it was twice as long as the original? But yeah, you get things such as Fanny and Alexander (I noticed @suspended was talking about it the other day) where there is the full/series version and the shorter film version... but personally I will never feel as though I have seen that kind of thing properly until I've seen the full version somehow.
And I don't want to go to the cinema to see the cut down version, I want to go and sit in luxury and look at a massive screen to see the definitive ultimate mega fucking version. What's the point of building a screen that twenty stories high if people can't be bothered to sit there and look at it for two hours?

This one looks promising... all done in one take like Victoria apparently. I like that guy who plays the main guy, he seems like a decent character actor who has been bubbling away for years without people like me ever being able to remember his (admittedly quite unmemorable) name.

Memes, just not in this post

tangent, Boiling Point is good, if you’ve worked in hospitality it bites a bit more - petty hierarchies, types of yelp reviewer, food allergies, cunts who chisel tips, stress and chaos caught well

There's some odd stuff going on with the Pinkett Smith family anyway, what with the way they insist on turning their domestic problems into content,

That and the fact they got caught trying to indoctrinate a bunch of kids into Scientology,
