I don't listen to Burial for the same reasons I listen to Proper Dance Music, I doubt anyone does. I think he was good at what he does and then his music became too self-parodic - that EP he did a couple of years ago that was the coming-out-as-trans-at-Xmas chintzy schmaltz was just too far for me. A lot of the space in his early music was filled in by your own ears - the snippets of familiar samples and vocals left you to fill in the gaps yourself, plug your emotions into the music as you felt. Now it's too obvious, too clearly sign-posted, you can see the magician's tricks and the illusion is a mere presentation.

OK I'll try and listen to that burial after I've listened to the other list one from John fm that versh posted. But if I've nothing good go say about it, I won't say anything at all.

I think my main issue with burial is that he makes me think of good jungle, and I Just prefer all that good old jungle. I listen to so much old jungle it's unbelievable, I never thought I would go back to it like this, but I have done.

That conor thomas smoking man mix, Gerald's one in the jungle mix, been on repeat last few weeks. Been meaning to write about them on here, haven't figured out an angle.
that gerald one in the jungle mix is absolutely top, man's known for his productions but he was a top selector in jungle's heyday! this one is so good as well, quite solid all the way thru

Dilbert! Nice to see you back. Yeah there's a 2nd one in the jungle with Gerald, but it's the navigator one that's absolutely top notch.

yeah, this period, these tunes... these sets of gerald's were early in my introduction, and while i have a great deal of fun seeking out earlier darkside tunes, ragga, ruffer hardcore, happy piano stuff... or, with much less luck, trying to appreciate the sort of post-bukem liquid suff of the late 90s... i always get the sad suspicion that nothing could ever top that 95/96 Metalheadz, Good Looking, Reinforced etc. strain in jungle. But i'm still plugging away listening to new stuff as well and enjoying some of the quite diverse contemporary jungle a lot more than I ever could say for the music which immediately succeeded this period

It's decent. wish he'd do away with the scratchy vinyl effect, though. not necessary and immediately makes me think "FFS, not that again!". kind of trait and passe at this point.

i've just listened to the lockdown mix he did. and his style is sounding better than ever for me really. those strings on archangel are quite spectacular. the bits at the start and end where he just lets the sound of cars going past be the music. are self-parody though
