I came here to find out what Dissensus considers good in 2013, since I'm hopelessly out of touch now, and after 6 pages I haven't learned much more than that some people here think the new fucking Justin Timberlake is good.

Is that really all that is happening? I'll believe you if you say yes, but come on Dissensus you're better than this.

There is a slew of threads based on just this year, and respective genres. I'm pretty sure any sanctity of Dissensus fell apart a while back. Shit, I'm on the board.

I expect reddit humor to invade us within a year or so (probably sooner).

From what I gather this is how things look. Correct me if I'm wrong:

1. "Brostep" appropriates dubstep sounds for a younger American audience, calls itself dubstep, alienates some listeners of dubstep proper.

2. "Trap" appropriates Southern trap sounds for a whiter American audience, calls itself trap, alienates some listeners of trap proper.

3. People who once made dubstep proper go on a reactionary mission to distance themselves from brostep, crossbreeding the old sound with all manner of genres. The sound gets more and more tasteful to the point where everything sounds like house music.

4. People who once made trap proper continue to make it, never really taking new trap seriously in the first place, if they were ever even aware of it.

5. Some people in Manchester (or wherever. "the north") re-purpose formulaic big club electro house sounds, make the bass lines sound a little more like they have something to do with UK garage, so gets weirdly argued by some people as being the most original sound amongst a heap of unoriginal sounds.

6. Justin Timberlake puts out another pretty good record.

I'm off to listen to black metal for a year.

That being said, I like what Slackk is doing right now. It's honourable.

That juke shit in Chicago is still one of the best things going to my mind as well, though I rarely hear people talk about it anymore.

EDIT: As a final note, I'd like to say for the record that this nu-Trap shit is way more offensive to me than Brostep ever was. At least brostep makes sense. I reckon that the actual tracks that come out of the brostep scene are pretty shit overall, but let's be honest, it's still just a bunch of men in a room making faces like somebody farted when a big bassline drops. Not much of a departure. Just that everyone is about 10-15 years younger.

as far as best records of 2013 so far, bilal's a love surrreal is one of mine as far as alt-R&B goes.
my bloody valentine is also up there. still not heard the timberlake album.
i enjoyed the fact that wu-tangs capadonna made a double album - its ok, i just like the fact its there.
dj day's land of 1000 dances is a personal favourite - if you want to hear hip-hop producers making instrumental music thats a bit todd rundgren, a bit 70s soul, a bit steely dan, a bit easy listening in air if not actual sound, and a bit 90s indie rap (it has no rappers on it though), id recommend it... i really love it.
i liked the gunplay cops n robbers mixtape a fair bit too. worth it just to hear him over ghetto bird and whats my name.
the ben ufo fabric mix is one of the best things ive heard as far as uk bass goes. not a weak moment on there and its really nice and dense.
as far as proper trad dubstep, i think kryptic minds' convoluted is really great and garagey, rhythm wise. gives tradstep a good name.

Voodoo Priest
pretty much sums up the state of things

yup, pretty happy with that too ish tbh!

keep watching footwork this year too. there's enough "footwork junglism" stuff coming out from both sides of the pond atm for it to almost be a new phase for the sound imo, and a good 1 too...

Tim Reaper

green bay crew.
What do you lot think of Charli XCX? I find her a bit interesting at how somewhat against the grain she is to the usual pop act you see nowadays.
