I was reading Rich talking about his Muslim mates gleefully leering at strippers and drinking gallons of booze but drawing the line at eating ham and thought, for whatever reason, that seems completely natural to me and moreover I would have contempt for them for eating pig but not for violating the other laws. I'm not sure why this is.

well, you aren't killing another living being by drinking booze and watching strippers.

Weird, innit. We all have the same biological drives but the way different cultures end up with such different concepts of morality is, I suspect, a mystery that will never be fully solved.

True, but Muslims aren't bothered about eating chicken or beef, are they? I mean, the aversion to pork is not based on a consideration of animal rights. It's totally different to Jain vegetarianism, for example.

Soup

Loads of carrots, celery, leeks and onions fried in button. Add thyme and parsley, season like fuck, add water, simmering boil for a few hours, whiz, taste/season, add diced spring onions and experience divinity. If you take the celery out pre-whizz, you’ll have something you could make a gravy with

You could toast a crouton related topping and sprinkle cheese on, depends what kind of paisan you’re feeding, fuel/faff. Even better to do a turkey stock with bones, punchier taste. All the Tribe in-laws survive on chicken soup in winter, ie an entire chicken cut, sweet potato, onions, carrots, bay, serve sieved so it’s golden bronze

Neck of lamb is a good cut, render it fully, throw loads of robust flavours. Had pot noodle and chips over Christmas due to freezer failure

That's some shitty Christmas luck there, @WashYourHands.

I made soup yesterday, as it happens. I used some of the stock that I'd made from the bones left over after stripping the meat from the Serrano ham, which by itself is hammier than Kenneth Branagh. The rest was just three other ingredients: some of the ham, tinned peas and a bit of sweet potato to thicken, then the whole lot cooked and whizzed up.

That's right, @Benny B - I made pea and ham soup from Serrano ham. How do you like them apples?

have you ever seen those jars of roast aubergine you can get in turkish shop?
actually quite nice. smoky.
Yeah, they're good. Also the roasted sweet peppers which I think are a Balkan thing.

They always come in oil, so they need a good drain first.

I'm going to make spaghetti carbonara in a bit, using some of the roughly 5 kilotons of ham I've still got left from megameat.jpg.
